Girls basketball: Fremont, still searching for its identity, scores double-digit-comeback win over Morgan

PLAIN CITY — In previous years, one could look at Fremont High’s girls basketball team and find a couple of go-to scoring options plus abundant basketball experience all around.

This year’s Silverwolves are inexperienced, don’t yet have go-to scoring options and, in the words of their head coach, are still searching for their identity.

What they do have right now is four straight wins against a variety of opposition, the latest of which was Tuesday’s 48-46 win over Morgan where they came back from a double-digit, third-quarter deficit.

Fremont (4-3) will gladly take the win and move on. The Silverwolves didn’t allow a Morgan field goal over six minutes in the fourth quarter, made a few late shots and forced late turnovers, making up for earlier struggles against the Trojans’ press and at the free-throw line.

“I think we just kind of started off slow. We need to start better in the beginning,” senior guard Kale Brian said. “I think we just didn’t take care of the ball. As soon as we started to take care of the ball, things started to fall into place.”

Brian was one of three players to co-lead Fremont with 11 points, along with Ama Herrick and Abby Christensen. All three made important shots down the stretch.

Fremont’s been down double digits in the second half a couple times already this year and lost, with both a tough schedule and inexperience as reasons why.

“We’re pretty young, so just having freshmen come up who are inexperienced at the varsity level and a lot of us didn’t play varsity last year, so I think we’re just pretty inexperienced,” Brian said.

Tuesday, the Silverwolves trailed by 11 points late in the third quarter and won. They got within six going into the fourth quarter, then trailed 41-33 early in the fourth. Brian made a floater and an open layup, Herrick made a floater after an offensive rebound, then banked in a runner to tie the game at 41 with 4:04 left.

No matter what shot Morgan took, there seemed to be a lid on the basket. And then it seemed like Fremont was the team that stole the ball or forced a turnover every possession.

A Christensen jumper with 1:18 left gave Fremont the lead for good, 44-43, but not without one last emotional swing.

After a steal, Brian made a 3-pointer, Morgan’s Leah Birkeland made a 3, Herrick was fouled and made one of two free throws to set up a full-court inbounds for the Trojans with three seconds left.

Leah Birkeland heaved a pass and found a somehow-wide-open Eva Birkeland, who had time for two dribbles before hoisting an off-balance shot that missed to the left.

The loss dropped the Trojans to 1-8 as they break in a lot of new starters and bench players against one of the toughest schedules in the state. Leah Birkeland and Abby Titus co-led Morgan with 11 points.

With three players co-leading Fremont in scoring, that makes seven different players — one of whom is out with a hand injury — who have either led or co-led the team the Silverwolves in scoring.

“They work hard and they want to do what I’m asking, we just need more experience on the floor unfortunately and there’s only one way to do that, and you’re going to take some lumps and you’re going to make some mistakes,” FHS head coach Lisa Dalebout said. “I’d like to see us make better decisions at the end of the game but, other than that, I’m pleased with them coming back and obviously finishing the game off and winning.”
