PLAIN CITY — Weber School District parents should be pleased that officials are pinching their pennies.

Fremont High senior point guard Hunter Hansen bulked up and added 15 pounds of weight over the summer and, when he reported to basketball camp this fall, he could no longer fit into the No. 2 jersey he wore last year.

Rather than procure a larger size uniform with his same number, the Silverwolves offered a larger, existing jersey, so he chose No. 10.

Different number, same results for the player who has put up numbers that earned him a scholarship to Weber State University next season.

Hansen scored 20 points in the first half against Bonneville in a Thursday matinee non-region game and Fremont coasted to a 65-45 victory.

He had 12 points in the first quarter, including Fremont’s first seven, and closed the half with a jumper from the left angle that led to a 37-18 edge at the break.

“Shots were just falling. My teammates did a good job of finding me and I kind of got rolling,” Hansen said. “I haven’t been shooting well lately, so I wanted to get going early; I saw a couple go in and that helped.”

As the Bonneville went down the hall to the locker room at the half, Hansen’s aunt happened to walk by them and heard the Lakers coaches lament that “we aren’t doing that bad, considering Hunter Hansen is their point guard.”

Hansen more or less assumed that role in the third quarter by dishing three assists on three straight Fremont (8-4) possessions, and the Silverwolves maintained a comfortable cushion, 53-35, after three.

“I was trying to take what they gave me. They started guarding me a little closer and doubling so I was just trying to find the open guy. We were hitting shots, so that was good,” Hansen said.

Tyler Allen came off the bench for Fremont and scored eight points in the third period, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Bonneville (4-5) outscored the Silverwolves 17-16 in the third quarter — and got to within 39-27 — but Fremont regrouped and held the Lakers to 10 in the final frame, only scoring 12, so the second half was more competitive.

“They started hitting shots. We knew at some point they would go on a run,” Hansen said. “We kind of took it and then went on a run of our own.”

Hansen found foul trouble in the second half, then added three free throws late in the game to finish with 23 points on 6 of 8 from the field and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. He handed out seven dimes.

Allen had 13 points, while Ryker Saunders also netted double digits for Fremont at 10 points.

Easton Duft checked in with nine points and six assists for the Silverwolves, and Derrius Wright scored four points off the bench and hauled down six rebounds.

For Bonneville, Ben Tesch followed up a 27-point performance last week against Ogden with 26 on Thursday. That included a trio of treys and 5 of 6 from the charity stripe.

Zac Combe was next in line for the Lakers, scoring eight points. Bonneville only used six players in the game.
