6A wrestling: 3 dozen area wrestlers advance to state semifinals, Layton boys lead big

Despite some upset losses to highly seeded wrestlers, Layton High’s boys wrestling team has a large lead in the team standings after the first day of the 6A boys wrestling state tournament on Wednesday at Utah Valley University.

The Lancers have 140.5 points, well ahead of Westlake’s 88 points and Pleasant Grove’s 87. Overall, 20 area boys wrestlers booked their spots in Thursday’s semifinals at 11 a.m.

At 106 pounds, Roy High freshman Kaleb Blackner pinned both of his opponents to advance to the semifinals. Blackner will face Hunter Sanchez of Mountain Ridge, who upset Layton No. 1 seed Aiden Bastian.

At 113 pounds, Syracuse freshman Mason Carlson and Layton junior Dagen Lamano will face off in an all-Region 1 semifinal after they went 2-0. Carlson pinned both his opponents and Lamano got one pin followed by a 9-2 decision win over Roy’s Maximo Quintana.

On the other side of the 113 bracket, Layton’s Kyler Pace will face Mountain Ridge’s Lander Bosh in the semis.

Layton sophomore Geronimo Rivera Jr. advanced to the 120-pound semis with a 17-1 win by technical fall, followed by an 18-second pin against Lone Peak’s Corban Atwood. Syracuse’s Teague Brown will face Westlake’s Korbin Chuchran in the other 120 semifinal.

Fremont’s Jason Worthley will face Farmington’s Hudson Palmer in another all-Region 1 semifinal at 126 pounds. Worthley won his matches via technical fall (16-1) and major decision (15-4), while Palmer scored a major decision (8-0) followed by a 7-4 decision.

Layton’s Noah Bull pinned Westlake’s Jamyne Xoumphonphackdy and will face Jacob Carson of Pleasant Grove in the other 126-pound semifinal.

Layton’s Logan Crowther will wrestle in the 132-pound semifinals after beating Davis’ JC Warnick in the second round. Crowther faces Pleasant Grove’s Devyn Greenland in the semis.

In the 138-pound semis, Syracuse’s Gavin Regis faces Westlake’s Josh Fish and Layton’s Jace Lemons takes on American Fork’s Tege Kelley.

Layton’s Ryker Brann pinned teammate Jacob Ireland in the 144-pound second round and will face Fremont’s Treyson Hunt in the semifinals.

At 157 pounds, Fremont’s Logan Hancey advanced to the semifinals after two wins by technical fall and and will face Mountain Ridge’s Preston Stevens.

Weber’s Tanner Giatras pinned Fremont’s Trapper Anderson to advance to the 165-pound semifinals, where he’ll take on Corner Canyon’s Caleb Robinson.

On the other side of the bracket, Layton’s Kaden Bennie meets Lone Peak’s Corbin Baumgartner in the semis after Baumgartner upset No. 1 seed Andrew Crowther of Layton.

Layton’s Ethan Hearne advanced to the 175-pound semifinals to take on Corner Canyon’s Leimana Fager.

Layton’s Kael Bennie meets Riverton’s Gage Watt in the 190-pound semis and Weber’s Ian Briskey faces Granger’s Martin Lake at 285 pounds.

Thursday’s championship matches are scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m.

6A Girls Tournament

Sixteen area wrestlers will square off in Thursday’s 11 a.m. state semifinals of the 6A girls wrestling tournament at UVU.

Syracuse’s Payton Gines and Davis’ Kristina Kent are in opposite semifinals in the 100-pound bracket. Gines faces Herriman’s Macie Anderson in the semis while Kent, who’s carrying a 27-0 record, meets Mountain Ridge’s Karlie Bishop.

Syracuse’s Emily Ball will wrestle in the 105-pound semifinals against Cyprus’ Caroline Pastrana, Layton’s Marlie Rigby and Syracuse’s Sabrina Jensen will wrestle each other at 110 and Layton’s Tatum Stanger faces West’s Madelyn Nielsen in the other 110 semifinal.

At 115 pounds, Weber’s Aleena Navarrete takes on Westlake’s Ella Arnold in the semis, Layton’s Erin Fuller upset No. 1 seed Nadia Thomas of Skyridge to advance to the 120-pound semis and Davis’ Valentin Martinez held serve as a No. 1 seed at 125 pounds and meets Granger’s Kimberly Chaparro in the semifinals.

Weber’s Amyrlin McDonald and Syracuse’s Daeja Sundquist are in opposite semifinals in the 130-pound bracket and Davis’ Alejandra Martinez advanced to the 135 semis.

Syracuse’s Amelia Roennebeck faces Westlake’s Hailey Pigg in the 140 semifinals, Layton’s Haley Diaz meets Corner Canyon’s Isabella Morgan in the 145-pound semis, Syracuse’s Ashlyn Packer takes on Pleasant Grove’s Leena Lacayo at 155 pounds and in the 170-pound semis, Syracuse’s Hope Barton wrestles Copper Hills’ Anya Hatch.

Syracuse’s girls wrestling team is in second place in the team standings with 90 points, trailing first-place Westlake, which has 132.5 points.

Thursday’s 6A championship matches are scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m.

The 5A state tournament is at UVU on Friday and Saturday.
