Utah Men’s State Amateur golf: 7 Northern Utah golfers advance to round of 32

Several golfers with Northern Utah ties advanced to the next round of match play in the Utah Men’s State Amateur golf tournament on Wednesday at the Salt Lake Country Club.
David Liechty beat Charlie Taylor 6 & 5, Parker Bunn took out Aidan Thain 3 & 2, Rand Sargent beat Steven Croft 2 & 1 and Tanner Telford beat Thomas Young 4 & 3.
Liechty, a recent Layton High graduate, won six of his match’s final seven holes to claim the win.
Bunn, a two-time defending Region 5 champion on Bonneville High’s golf team, won holes 12-14 to turn a tied match into a win.
David Jennings, who plays out of Layton’s Valley View Golf Course, beat Utah Utes golfer Davis Johnson 2 & 1. Their match was tied after 14 holes before Jennings won the 15th and 16th holes.
Utah golfer and Farmington High alumnus Braxton Watts beat Will Blanchard 3 & 1. Watts shot a 5-under 66 in the second round of stroke-play qualifying Tuesday, which was the low round of both qualifying rounds.
Weber State golfer Brendan Thomas beat Brennan Coburn 5 & 4. Thomas won five of the first eight holes in the match.
Reed Nielsen (Valley View) lost 2 & 1 to Keanu Akina, Luke Crapo (Ogden Country Club) fell 2 & 1 to Martin Leon and Hayden Banz (Weber State) lost 1-up on the final hole to Ryker Dunkley.
Wednesday’s winners advance to the round of 32, which starts between 7:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday. Winners in the round of 32 advance to the round of 16, with tee times starting between 11:40 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday.
In the round of 32, Liechty will face Caysen Wright (2020 6A state tournament medalist), Bunn takes on BYU golfer Elijah Turner and Sargent faces Drexel University golfer Oscar Maxfield.
Telford will meet Corner Canyon junior Bowen Mauss, Jennings takes on Josh Howe, Watts faces SUU golfer Leo Torres and Thomas plays Herriman High golfer Elliot Bond.
