Prep roundup: Box Elder, Fremont pick up big region softball wins

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Box Elder High softball rallied for five runs in the final two innings to take over second place from Bonneville in a 10-8 victory Thursday.

Justy Pritchard hit 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs for Box Elder (19-4, 11-2 Region 5). Jenna Marble and Paige Baker each doubled, with Baker driving in two. While the offense rallied, Kennadie Blackmer allowed one baserunner (a walk) and struck out two in two scoreless innings to finish the game.

Aya Larson homered and drove in four runs for Bonneville (16-4, 10-3). Mylee Pedersen homered and scored three runs while driving in two. Kaylee McAfee doubled.

FREMONT 6, WEBER 4

PLAIN CITY — Savannah Palmatier, Jessica Broadbent and Rylee Andreasen were the only Fremont players to manage singles off Weber pitcher Kendall Strasburg, but the Warriors committed seven errors and the Silverwolves stayed on top of Region 1.

Palmatier drew two walks and scored three runs for Fremont (9-4, 7-2 Region 1), which totaled eight walks as a team. In a matter of dueling scorebooks, one box score credits Fremont with an additional hit and limits Weber to five errors.

Hailey Merrill doubled and drove in two for Weber (9-10, 5-4). Isabela Bird had two RBIs.

DAVIS 7, LAYTON 0

KAYSVILLE — Two days after a combined no-hitter, Cambell Christensen and Serena Roth combined for another shutout in Region 1 play, totaling 12 strikeouts.

Christensen struck out nine, walked zero and allowed four hits across five innings for Davis (14-4, 6-2 Region 1). Roth allowed zero hits in the final two innings, walking one, hitting one batter and striking out three. Lauryn Hall hit 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Riley Jaques doubled twice and Lauren Hansen singled twice to account for Layton’s (2-17, 0-9) four hits.

SYRACUSE 12, FARMINGTON 10

FARMINGTON — Grace Thomas hit 4 for 5 with a triple and five RBIs, and Syracuse scored six runs in the final two innings to win at Farmington.

Jazmine Prathan hit 4 for 4 with three doubles and three RBIs for Syracuse (9-8, 4-5 Region 1).

Kiley Gazafy homered and drove in five runs for Farmington (8-8, 4-4).

NORTHRIDGE 17, WOODS CROSS 2

LAYTON — Kaylee Shirreffs doubled twice and drove in four runs in three innings as Northridge run-ruled Woods Cross (2-16, 0-13 Region 5).

Kaydence Chournos doubled twice and scored three runs for Northridge (5-13, 4-8) Aubrey Solomon hit 3 for 3 and scored three times while allowing two earned runs on three hits in the circle.

VIEWMONT 14, ROY 3

ROY — Roy couldn’t keep up with Viewmont (8-12, 6-7 Region 5) in a five-inning home loss.

Quincy Johnson hit 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for Roy (4-17, 3-10). Kylee Weitzel doubled and scored a run.

BOUNTIFUL 13, CLEARFIELD 0

CLEARFIELD — Buzzsaw Bountiful (21-3, 12-1 Region 5) two-hit Clearfield on the road.

Aly Ridge and Addyson Haddock each singled for Clearfield (9-13, 5-7).

BASEBALL

SUMMIT ACADEMY 12, MORGAN 2

MORGAN — No. 12 Summit Academy (9-12) stunned No. 5 Morgan by taking a 9-0 lead before the Trojans got on the board to claim Game 1 of a best-of-three series to open the 3A playoffs.

George Jensen hit 2 for 2 to lead Morgan (17-8) at the plate as the Trojans totaled seven singles on the day. Beck Sheffield drove in both runs.

Morgan hosts Game 2 at 1 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, follows.

UNION 11, OGDEN 1

ROOSEVELT — No. 10 Ogden managed three hits and fell at No. 7 Union (16-10) in five innings to open a best-of-three 3A playoff series.

Ransom Green, Diego DeLeon and Kolton Rich each singled for Ogden (9-13). Will Minkevitch had the RBI.

Union hosts Game 2 at 1 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, follows.

CLEARFIELD 6, ROY 0

CLEARFIELD — Taven Swartz struck out 10, walked five and allowed five hits to lead Clearfield in a shutout of Roy.

Ryan Frei and Peyton Kotter were two of five players for Clearfield (11-11, 7-4 Region 5) to total two hits, and each drove in two runs. Hudson Meyer hit 2 for 4 with a double.

Cameron Baty hit 2 for 4 to lead Roy (4-18, 3-8) at the plate. Brandon Brechbill limited Clearfield to one run on four hits in the final 2 1/3 innings.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

SYRACUSE 3, FARMINGTON 1

FARMINGTON — Davis Caldwell totaled 17 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and two aces as Syracuse separated itself from Farmington atop Region 1 with a 24-26, 28-26, 25-19, 25-21 victory.

Chase Barrett added 12 kills for Syracuse (18-7, 9-0 Region 1). Branson Hamblin totaled 28 digs, Caleb Roskelley 31 assists and Joshua Godfrey five blocks.

Farmington (15-10, 7-2) did not report stats.

DAVIS 3, LAYTON 0

KAYSVILLE — Davis swept Layton 25-13, 25-20, 25-12.

Jack Bennett had 20 assists and 10 digs for Davis (12-6, 5-4 Region 1).

Layton (1-13, 1-8) did not report stats.

VIEWMONT 3, ROY 0

ROY — Viewmont (16-10, 11-2 Region 5) swept Roy 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.

Dahlen Pontius totaled 10 kills and two blocks for Roy (5-17, 2-11). Finn Nakasone had 12 assists and Kael Miller 15 digs.
