Utah Men’s State Amateur golf: Layton’s Liechty advances to quarterfinals with dramatic win

Recent Layton High graduate David Liechty advanced to the quarterfinals of the Utah Men’s State Amateur golf tournament by winning both of his matches Thursday at the Salt Lake Country Club.

Liechty, a Utah Tech signee, beat Caysen Wright 2 & 1 in the round of 32. Liechty won four straight holes on the front nine to take a commanding lead.

Liechty then dramatically beat BYU signee Peter Kim in 23 holes in the round of 16. Liechty was 2-up through 12 holes.

The quarterfinals tee off beginning at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Tanner Telford (Utah Utes, Morgan High alumnus) defeated Bowen Mauss 3 & 1 in the round of 32. Telford won four holes on the front nine, then won the 17th hole to end the match.

Telford then fell to Cameron Crawford 1-up in the round of 16 after Crawford won the 18th hole.

Weber State golfer Brendan Thomas beat Elliot Bond 8 & 7 in the round of 32, winning eight of the match’s 11 holes, before losing in the round of 16 by a 1-up score against Kenny Palmer.

Weber County teenager Parker Bunn fell 2-up against BYU golfer Elijah Turner in the round of 32. Turner won the 18th hole, which Bunn needed to win to force a sudden-death playoff.

Rand Sargent, playing out of Layton’s Valley View Golf Course, lost 8 & 6 to Drexel University golfer Oscar Maxfield.

David Jennings (Valley View) lost 2 & 1 to Josh Howe. Jennings was 2-up through seven holes.

Utah Utes golfer and Farmington High alumnus Braxton Watts lost 2 & 1 to Leo Torres. Torres won three straight holes on the back nine.
