Carolyn DeHoff resigned as the Royals’ head coach after nine seasons at the helm, she told the Standard-Examiner on Monday.
“Whats nice is I was able to make the decision that I’m good, I’m done. I feel like I’ve given my life to this game and I feel that Roy revived my love for the game, because obviously my last few years at North Dakota State weren’t fantastic,” she said.
DeHoff said she plans on beginning a master’s degree program in educational leadership this April, and intends to stay at RHS as a teacher.
Before Roy, DeHoff played college basketball at Arizona State. She started her 34-year coaching career at Coronado High in Scottsdale, Arizona, then coached in an assistant role at the University of Wyoming, Weber State and the University of Utah.
In 2008, she was named head coach at North Dakota State and compiled an overall record of 72-105 before resigning in February 2014. A few months later, she was named Roy High’s head coach.
In nine seasons under DeHoff, the Royals accumulated a 67-126 spread across five different regions and won the 5A Region 5 championship in 2018. The 2018 team was led by center Josie Williams, who played four years at Utah Valley before transferring to Louisville this season.
In 2021, the No. 19 Royals upset No. 14 Copper Hills 70-55 in the first round of the playoffs, which is their most recent postseason win.
For the past two seasons, Roy has competed in 6A Region 2 with six Salt Lake County schools but will move down to 5A Region 5 for the next two school years. The Royals went 6-16 this season, 6-6 in region games and lost at Syracuse in the first round of the 6A state playoffs.
DeHoff called her time coaching the Royals “rewarding” and praised all of the players and assistant coaches who’ve put their time toward the program over the years, as well as all of the support she’s received from administration.
As of Monday evening, the Roy High girls basketball head coaching vacancy hadn’t been posted.
