FARR WEST — Bonneville High’s girls golf team began Tuesday’s final round of the 5A state tournament at Remuda Golf Course tied for the lead with Skyline and one shot ahead of Timpview.
The Lakers ended the final round by watching Skyline and Timpview collect trophies instead.
With a final-round 329, Bonneville finished in third place at the state tournament with a two-day score of 73-over 649, ending up 14 shots out of second place and 19 shots off first-place Skyline.
“You come in tied first after day one, there’s a lot of added pressure to that and a lot of it was just trying to keep them focused on the task at hand,” Bonneville coach Tyler Dunyon said. “Regardless of the results, these girls are incredible. I think that they proved that throughout region play and you get here, and you start playing with some of these other teams, these other regions, you don’t know how they match up or what they’re gonna do and they battled in the end. That’s all you can ask for really.”
Lakers golfers shot 42-over on the front nine, an early hole too deep to climb out of with regards to the team title race.
There were plenty of individual highlights for Bonneville, which had one senior, four juniors and one freshman golfing at the state tournament a couple weeks after a dominant Region 5 title victory.
Ninth-grader Whitni Johnson finished in solo sixth place with a 4-over 148 over for the state tournament. She shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday, which included an eagle on the par-4 11th hole where she made a long downhill putt she initially thought would race by the hole.
“Well, I hit over the trees on 11 and went on the green, had like a 30 or 40-foot putt and I made it. It was going pretty fast, but it went in,” Johnson said.
“I played pretty solid. Sad that I three-putted the last whole, could have been 1-under but that’s alright,” she added.
Kylie Johnson finished tied for 10th by shooting a two-day score of 12-over 156. She had a rough front nine Tuesday but recovered well on the back nine to shoot 84 in her second round.
Ivy Herrick tied for 18th with rounds of 82 and 80 (18-over 162). Mia Marberger and Irene Sola took 45th and 46th, respectively, shooting 184 and 185.
Northridge’s Isabel Wade finished tied for 13th with a 13-over 157, scoring 79 and 78 in the two rounds. Nicole Kirkwood tied for 39th, Kennedy Whitaker tied for 47th and Mateya Shepherd tied for 50th to round out Northridge’s scoring contingent as the Knights finished ninth as a team.
Skyline’s Ashley Lam finished as the medalist by nine shots, going 11-under for the tournament. She led the Eagles to their first girls golf state championship in school history, beating Timpview by just five shots and ending the Thunderbirds’ state-title streak at three seasons.
WEBER GIRLS THIRD IN 6A
At Riverbend Golf Course in Riverton, Weber High’s girls team missed out on a second-place trophy by two shots, finishing the 6A state tournament with a two-day score of 95-over 671, behind Corner Canyon’s mark of 669.
Individually, Weber’s Remi Rawlings shot 4-over 148 for the tournament to finish tied for third place. Fremont’s Susan Tiffner and Farmington’s Sydney Richards both tied for eighth at 14-over 158. Fremont’s Madalyn Hadley was solo 10th place with a 15-over 159 and Clearfield’s Cameron Moffat took 13th place, shooting 23-over 167.
Rounding out Weber’s scoring contingent, Samantha Messerly finished tied for 14th place, Izzy Rawlings tied for 23rd and Brynn Bischoff tied for 29th. Fremont (703) and Farmington (721) were fourth and fifth in the team standings, respectively.
Roy High, after winning Region 2, qualified as a team for the state tournament. Only three Roy golfers were able to play at the tournament — four are required for team scoring — and competed individually; all three missed the first-round cut Monday.
Lone Peak won its fifth state title in seven seasons by shooting 36-over 612. LP’s Aadyn long shot 2-under 142 to win medalist honors.
