Prep roundup: Syracuse claims playoff-opening wins in baseball, softball, soccer

The 6A and 5A baseball playoffs began Saturday with the first game of a first-round, best-of-three series. Game 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday with the third game, if necessary, to follow.

SYRACUSE 15, GRANGER 7

SYRACUSE — Tag Hamblin batted 3 for 3 with four RBIs and a double to lead No. 14 Syracuse past No. 19 Granger.

Tatum Martin hit 3 for 5 with two RBIs for Syracuse (12-13), Carson Miles drove in three runs and Jake Hopkins struck out 13 in six innings pitched.

DAVIS 7, HERRIMAN 5

KAYSVILLE — JC Warnick batted 1 for 2 with three RBIs and two walks as No. 16 Davis held off a late rally by No. 17 Herriman.

Kaleb Weaver pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out six with four runs allowed for Davis (11-15) while also hitting a triple. Max Hunter batted 2 for 4 and Wally Grant went 1 for 1 with three walks.

WESTLAKE 13, ROY 3

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Tyler Clark homered and Samuel Smith hit 2 for 3 with a double as No. 18 Roy (10-16) lost at No. 15 Westlake in six innings.

LONE PEAK 14, WEBER 6

HIGHLAND — Weber led 2-0 and was within 5-4 in the fourth inning, but couldn’t overcome 10 errors against No. 11 Lone Peak.

Ashton Burnett hit two doubles for No. 22 Weber (6-18) and Dominic Salerno batted 2 for 4 with a stolen base. Gage Clark went 2 for 4 and Ridge Torman drove in two runs.

BINGHAM 10, FARMINGTON 0

SOUTH JORDAN — Jaxon Ball had the lone hit for No. 20 Farmington (8-18) in a six-inning loss at No. 13 Bingham.

WOODS CROSS 11, BOX ELDER 6

BRIGHAM CITY — Box Elder made seven errors and gave up seven unearned runs as it dropped a back-and-forth game to No. 17 Woods Cross.

Tommy Greer homered and batted 2 for 4 for No. 16 Box Elder (12-9-1). Ryan Griffin and Tallin Chappell batted 2 for 4. Griffin allowed seven runs, but only two earned, in four innings pitched.

SOFTBALL

The 6A and 5A softball playoffs began Saturday with the first game of a first-round, best-of-three series. Game 2 is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday with the third game, if necessary, to follow.

SYRACUSE 8, CLEARFIELD 2

SYRACUSE — Jazmine Prathan hit her 11th home run of the year and No. 10 Syracuse led 6-0 after the first inning in a win over No. 23 Clearfield (3-20).

Brielle Milius and Jaidyn Franco each had two base hits with two RBIs for Syracuse (13-7). Jacee Hammon struck out 10 batters in five innings pitched. Mikela Millard batted 2 for 3 with one RBI.

DAVIS 16, LONE PEAK 1

KAYSVILLE — No. 13 Davis scored 16 runs on 10 hits and 10 walks to open the postseason with a three-inning win over No. 20 Lone Peak.

Jewel Korth and Abby Olsen batted 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Davis (13-8). Rayleigh Starnes had three RBIs and Hadley Isaacs drove in two. Serena Roth struck out six and allowed three hits.

BONNEVILLE 13, MURRAY 3

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Emmaline DeGroot and Mylee Pedersen hit home runs as No. 15 Bonneville (9-9) run-ruled No. 18 Murray in five innings.

DeGroot hit 2 for 2 with three RBIs, two walks and pitched all five innings with two earned runs allowed and three strikeouts. Pedersen and Peighton Summers drove in three runs each.

PAYSON 11, NORTHRIDGE 3

PAYSON — Kaylee Sherreffs drove in two runs and hit a double as No. 20 Northridge (8-15) gave up an early 3-1 lead at No. 13 Payson. Amaya Porter batted 2 for 3 for the Knights.

BOYS SOCCER

SYRACUSE 2, LAYTON 0

SYRACUSE — Ryken Hamblin scored two second-half goals to lift Syracuse to a first-round win in the 6A playoffs Friday night. Ty Richardson got the shutout in goal. Easton Cragun and Gio Fuentes tallied assists.

No. 12 Syracuse (9-7) next plays at No. 5 Roy (12-2) on Tuesday, May 16, in the second round.

No. 21 Layton ends its season at 4-11.

BOUNTIFUL 2, NORTHRIDGE 1

BOUNTIFUL — Bountiful eliminated Northridge in a 5A first-round playoff game Friday.

Elias Pacheco and Evan Drueding scored for No. 11 Bountiful (10-5), which next plays at No. 6 Murray on Tuesday.

Matthew Ramirez tallied a goal for No. 22 Northridge (5-9).

BOYS TENNIS

3A TOURNAMENT

SALT LAKE CITY — Ogden High boys tennis finished in third place in the 3A state tournament that concluded Saturday at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Ogden totaled 33 points, finishing behind Waterford’s 34 points and champion Rowland Hall’s 60 points.

Jackson Toliver, Ogden’s No. 1 singles player, won his semifinal 6-0, 6-0 against Waterford’s Tindur Christianson before dropping the title match 6-2, 6-1 to Rowland Hall’s Jaiden Handlon.

Spencer Christensen, the Tigers’ No. 2 singles player, beat American Heritage’s Parker Peterson 6-1, 6-4 in the semis before falling 6-0, 6-0 in the final against Rowland Hall’s Eric Lu.

At No. 3 singles, Peter Ondrus dropped his semifinal match 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 against Grantsville’s Camden Killian.

Ogden’s Alex Ivester and Gavin Hollada lost the No. 2 doubles semifinal 6-7 (4), 6-3, 4-6 against Waterford’s Grant Christensen and Owen Hammond.

Morgan’s No. 1 doubles team of Carter Bladen and Evan Harris got to the semifinals and lost 6-2, 6-2 to Juab’s Kyler Williams and Levi Covington.

TRACK AND FIELD

MORGAN — Morgan ran away with the girls and boys Region 13 track and field championships on its home track Friday.

Lucy Tripp and Alexi Weiers were three-event winners for Morgan girls. Tucker Giles won three events for Morgan’s boys team.
