Locals in college: Utah State soccer wins MWC tournament; BYU falls to Texas in title game

Utah State women’s soccer (14-7-1, 9-2 MWC) won its first-ever Mountain West Conference championship by defeating Colorado State 1-0 in the tournament title game Saturday afternoon in Laramie, Wyoming.

Kate Christian scored in the 78th minute and Diera Walton kept the clean sheet to send the Aggies to the program’s third all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Layton High alum and sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Richins was named to the all-tournament team. She totaled two assists this season.

Other Weber and Davis county-area players star for the Aggies, led by freshman midfielder Summer Diamond (Bonneville High). She totaled four goals and one assist in 19 starts; her nine points are third on the team.

Junior forward Bizzy Arevalo (Davis) totaled one goal and four assists in 22 starts. Senior defender Alysia Butters (Ogden) had one goal and three assists in 21 starts.

Senior defender Kelsey Kaufusi (née Steed, of Syracuse) dished three assists in 22 starts. Freshman forward Abby Schofield (Syracuse) scored once in 12 appearances.

Sophomore forward Hannah Roe (Layton) played in 14 games, and freshman defender Gracie East (Bonneville) is on the roster.

Utah State team learns its NCAA Tournament matchup and destination at 2 p.m. Monday.

BYU FALLS IN BIG 12 FINAL

BYU women’s soccer (16-2-3), ranked No. 6 nationally, lost 3-1 to Texas in the Big 12 Conference tournament championship match Saturday night in Round Rock, Texas.

Several local players lead BYU into the NCAA Tournament.

That group is led by senior midfielder Olivia Wade-Katoa (Davis High), who racked up 10 goals and eight assists in 21 games this season, and sophomore forward Erin Bailey (Layton), who totaled 10 goals and one assist in 20 games.

Senior forward/midfielder Ellie Boren (née Maughan, of Weber) has two goals and seven assists in 20 games, and senior defender Kendell Peterson (Northridge) totaled one goal and 11 assists in 20 games.

Senior defender Zoe Jacobs (Davis) totaled one goal and one assist in 19 games, and sophomore Caroline Stringfellow (Syracuse) is on the roster.
