Region 1 girls basketball preview: Davis the preseason favorite, 2 teams have new coaches

Davis' Avery Dain (20) drives against Fremont's Sierra Eddie (12) on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, in Plain City.

Below is an alphabetical, team-by-team preseason look at 6A Region 1 high school girls basketball.

Basketball games can officially begin for all classifications on Wednesday, with many schools starting on Friday and more beginning next week.

DAVIS

Davis went 20-3 last year, shared the Region 1 title with Fremont and went to the state semifinals for the first time since 2007.

The Darts figure to be most coaches’ preseason favorite in Region 1 as they return five of their top six scorers and have a veteran group going into what’s expected to be a challenging non-region schedule.

Leading the way is senior forward Kendra Kitchen, the reigning Standard-Examiner Player of the Year and recent Utah Valley University signee who averaged 18.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game.

Seniors Kate Richards, Avery Dain and Olivia Lifferth return, along with sophomores T’Maea Eteuati and Chloe Peery. Richards averaged 7.7 points and led the team with 3.4 assists per game. Eteuati scored 6.5 points per game playing starter minutes off the bench.

“Last season, we were extremely young and inexperienced. Hopefully, we can lean on lessons learned from last season to help us each game,” head coach Anne Jones said.

Davis only had one senior last year, Aryanna Bull, but she was second in points and rebounds on the team and was one of the team’s leaders.

Teams will likely spend lots of energy defending Kitchen this year, which could open up outside shots for everyone else.

FARMINGTON

There’s a brand new look to the Farmington girls basketball team this season after last year’s 12-11 mark and second-round playoff exit.

FHS graduated eight seniors from last year’s team and head coach Van Price retired after a decades-long teaching and coaching career at Layton High and Farmington.

The new head coach is Tara Ferrin, who comes to Farmington from Layton where she’s currently the girls soccer coach.

There are no returning starters but seniors Brynn Ryan, Kate Garff and junior Hailey Larsen are some of this year’s expected main contributors. Ryan is the leading returning scorer, averaging 2.2 points per game last year with a season-high of five points.

Farmington doesn’t play until after Thanksgiving and plays 5A teams until a Jan. 4 road trip to Pleasant Grove to end non-region play.

FREMONT

A year after sharing the Region 1 title and advancing to the state semifinals, Fremont has a young and fairly inexperienced team in spots. Seniors Syncere Langston, Kale Brian and Ama Herrick are the main returners.

Langston started and averaged 4.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Brian was normally one of the first players off the bench, and Herrick was further down the bench. Some new starters or bench players in the mix are junior Canyon Britt, sophomore Lily Hall, and freshmen Abigail Christensen and Olivia Surrage.

According to head coach Lisa Dalebout, Fremont has a disciplined and hard-working group, but size and experience inside is a concern, particularly with Saydee Heslop (6.3 rebounds per game last year) and Kaidance King (5.8 rebounds) not on the team.

The Silverwolves have tough games at Herriman and Skyridge, then play the Jordan Beetdigger Classic with more tough games against the likes of Mountain Ridge, Westlake and American Fork.

Their first home game is Dec. 12 against Morgan. They also have Bountiful (defending 5A champion), Ridgeline (defending 4A champ) and Copper Hills (last year’s No. 7 seed in 6A) on the non-region slate.

Fremont is probably still looked at as a contending team in Region 1, but the Silverwolves will be kind of a mystery while they figure things out against a tough schedule.

LAYTON

Layton went 5-17 last season, 3-9 in Region 1, beat Taylorsville in the first round of the playoffs and then lost to Fremont in the second round.

Head coach Rob Reisbeck likes the team’s senior leadership but also said the team has a lot of inexperience all around. That comes from the Lancers graduating some of their top players and also not having some of last year’s juniors and sophomores who regularly played.

Seniors Avery Potter, Ashlynn Purcell and Ebony Davis are the main returning players. Potter, a post player, is the leading returning scorer and rebounder from last year (5.7 points, 4.5 boards).

Seniors Oakley Homer, Katlynn Spendlove, Conley Santizo, plus juniors Lindsey Thurgood and Taya Pace are in the mix to start or regularly come off the bench.

Four of Layton’s first five games are on the road, and the Lancers play three days straight from Nov. 28-30 at Lone Peak, at Brighton and home to Copper Hills.

SYRACUSE

Syracuse went young last season, finished 16-9, took third in Region 1 and got to the state quarterfinals. The Titans thought it then, in the halls of the Dee Events Center after their playoff loss, and might think it now: this year could be pretty good.

They return four starters: senior point guard Avery Sanders (14.4 points, 3.8 steals per game last year), senior forward Cortnie Barker (8.4 points, 7.2 boards), sophomore Maylee Anderson (7.6 points) and senior Cami King (3.9 points).

“I feel that we have some good depth and some long, athletic girls. Hoping to disrupt passing lanes and play up-tempo,” head coach Braden Hamblin said.

Sophomore center Olivia Sorenson, who came off the bench last season, is expected to start. Senior Ariah Peterson and junior Kyleigh Nielson are additional returning role players.

The Titans face some of 6A’s top teams in non-region play, including Copper Hills and Bingham. For the most part, though, there’s a lot of winnable games in November and December.

WEBER

Weber brings back three starters from last year’s team — senior Allie Clark and juniors Abby Sayer and Logyn Howell — plus regulars Sunee Shaw and Katelyn Poulsen.

Sayer is the leading returning scorer (7.4 points) and rebounder (4.5). Sophomores Rylee Jugler, Katelyn Arbon and Abby Hall could be in the rotation.

Trevor Howell, the school athletic director, stepped down as baseball coach to take the girls basketball head coaching job in the offseason.

“The girls are extremely hard-working and coachable. It has been a great group to coach so far. We will share the ball and compete as a team to find success,” Howell said.

Weber plays 10 games before Christmas, four of which are the week of Dec. 4-9 in the revamped Burchell Classic tournament that includes Ben Lomond, Bonneville, Ogden, Weber, Northridge, Bear River, Layton Christian, Logan and Park City. Things ramp up in difficulty heading into region play.
