A football sits on the turf at Roy High School on June 23, 2023.

Weber High School has landed on its next head football coach.

The Warriors have hired Mo Cannon “after a long and extensive search and selection process,” reads an email sent to Weber High parents and students.

Cannon is a former Weber State offensive lineman (2017-18) and has been an assistant coach at Roy High for three years.

“We will be putting a product out on that field that is fast, controlled, efficient and physical!” Cannon wrote on Instagram. “This whole process is what I do it for. Turning boys into young men of great character and doing it in a high class, hard work manner.”

Cannon replaces Jayson Anderson, who coached the Warriors for five seasons. Anderson coached Weber to two Region 1 titles, including a 10-3 season and a trip to the state semifinals in 2021.

Elsewhere in Weber County, the 1A eight-man program at St. Joseph Catholic High in Ogden also has its next head coach. The school has hired Deshon Butler, athletic director Cindy White said.

Butler is a native of Fresno, California, and was a receiver and defensive back as a player. He has most recently been the head football coach at Orion Jr. High in Harrisville.

He replaces Jeramy Hunt-Loveless, who was the head coach at St. Joseph for one season, the first in the program’s history.

Cannon and Butler constitute the sixth and seventh new area head coaches ahead of the fall 2024 season, which seemingly completes the post-2023-season hiring cycle. Other hires this offseason are Cody Caputo at Clearfield, Eric Jones at West Field, Carson Mund at Box Elder, Nate Tuatagaloa at Fremont, and Mitch Tulane at Syracuse.

RUSSELL TO COACH AT WEST FIELD

Longtime coach Mike Russell will continue to don the whistle while shepherding the new programs at West Field High School.

Russell, the athletic director at the new Taylor high school set to open in the fall, will also coach boys basketball, the school announced Tuesday on social media.

Russell has 19 years of coaching experience, including as head coach for Syracuse High boys, Snow College women and Bonneville High girls.
