Girls basketball: Box Elder makes statement in road win at Clearfield

By BOB JUDSON - Special to the Standard-Examiner | Feb 14, 2024

CLEARFIELD — The final score of the Region 5 girls basketball game read Box Elder 57, Clearfield 38 — and if ever the result was not indicative of what happened on the court, Wednesday night was it.

Box Elder opened the bout with a 14-0 start and led 21-4 after one quarter. After a stagnant second stanza, the Bees put up a 14-6 third period to lead 45-21, then played subs to the end to sweep the season series.

Reigning Standard Star Ashlyn Wight drained a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter, had 15 points at the break and finished the game with 24 points and four 3s.

“It feels good … I’m shooting the ball well, but it’s also my teammates — we move the ball and they get me open shots,” Wight said. “Going in, shooting confident, it helps me a ton; not letting it get in my head.”

The Bees (17-5, 10-3 Region 5) beat Clearfield (15-6, 8-5) by 17 points in January at home, and used the same formula in this road win.

“Last time we played them we came out really strong, so we knew we had to do the same thing this time,” Wight said. “We came out hard defensively and our offense came from our defense and our ball-handling.

“We work on cutting and passing a lot in practice. We’ve played with each other a long time and we know how to back-cut; that’s our thing. We watch for it. We know when to connect with each other.”

Kamri Andersen also scored double digits for the Bees with 15 points, while Kaydence Barber and Olivia Godfrey added six each.

Xiyah Yarbrough hustled her way to 15 points for the Falcons — showing spunk by constantly driving into the paint — and Izzy Wyaskett had seven points.

Clearfield had its moments, including an 8-0 run just before the half, and won the second quarter 11-10. A 14-5 spurt against the Box Elder bench in the fourth quarter made the score more respectable at the buzzer.

With unbeaten Bountiful far out in front in Region 5, Wednesday’s game was for sole possession of second place and the Bees weren’t about to share it.

“That was awesome for us to come out and show people what we can do,” Wight said. “We were sitting at No. 4 (in RPI) so we want to keep pushing and get a good playoff run.”

RPI is no longer publicly viewable in preparation for the 5A tournament bracket release Saturday, but Clearfield was at No. 10, so this win can do nothing but help the Bees’ position.
