Layton High's Dave Katoa (10) gathers to shoot against Weber on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, in Layton.

After Layton High boys basketball survived its ninth one-possession or overtime win on Feb. 13 at Weber to secure an outright Region 1 title, head coach Kelby Miller told his team they had one more game to add to the resume, one last chance to get Class 6A’s No. 1 playoff seed.

A day after beating Fremont by 13 to close the regular season, the Lancers checked that box as well.

Layton is indeed the 6A boys No. 1 seed as the UHSAA released brackets and schedules for the 6A, 5A and 4A boys and girls basketball state championship tournaments on Saturday morning.

Seeding in the tournaments is based on an RPI formula that weighs win-loss records against strengths of schedule for each team and their opponents.

The reward for the Lancers (22-1) is a first-round bye and a second-round home game Friday against the winner of No. 16 Copper Hills and No. 17 Syracuse. Those teams (who played each other this season, a 75-70 Copper Hills home overtime win) combined to win one region game, but the Titans did play Layton to a five-point contest two weeks ago.

The 6A bracket also feature two Northern Utah matchups as Davis hosts Fremont and Weber hosts Farmington in the second round.

The Layton Christian Academy boys basketball team also earned a No. 1 seed. The Eagles (22-3), champions of Region 8, earned the 4A classification’s top spot. After a bye, LCA will host a second-round home game Friday.

Davis claimed the best seed among area girls teams. The Darts (20-1), outright Region 1 champions, are 6A’s No. 2 seed. After a first-round bye, Davis hosts the winner of No. 15 American Fork and No. 18 Farmington on Thursday.

Syracuse girls check in at No. 4 and host No. 13 Pleasant Grove in the second round Thursday.

While most tournaments are now all-comers, the larger 5A classification (30 total schools) includes only the top 24 teams. All Northern Utah 5A boys teams made the bracket, with No. 24 Clearfield eeking in. On the girls side, No. 25 Roy and No. 26 Bonneville did not make the playoffs.

After first- and second-round games at home sites from Feb. 20-23, the 6A and 5A tournaments move to the University of Utah for the final three rounds from Feb. 24 to March 1.

The 4A tournaments play the final three rounds Feb. 26-28 at Utah Valley University.

Below are the schedules for Northern Utah teams. Full brackets can be viewed online at uhsaa.org/tournaments.
