SYRACUSE — Throughout it all, Syracuse High girls basketball coach Braden Hamblin did not call a timeout as his team struggled through adversity against Bingham on Thursday night.

There was the start of the game when the Titans missed seven shots and had three turnovers in their first 11 possessions.

Then Bingham went on a 14-4 run in the third quarter and Hamblin didn’t give his team a breather.

An 8-0 Miner burst early into the fourth frame and Hamblin fumed and yelled, but idled.

“He trusted us to go make the right plays,” Syracuse senior captain Cortnie Barker said.

When Hamblin finally broke the mold and called a timeout with 6:30 left in the game, the Titans responded with a 14-4 spurt the rest of the way for a come-from-behind, 56-53 non-region victory over the Miners.

“We had good momentum coming in and our team was starting to jell super well,” Barker said. “So, we were able to connect and find the open pass and get those buckets we needed.

Bingham (8-5) scored the last basket of the third period and scored three more early in the fourth to open up a 49-42 lead.

Syracuse (8-3) came out of the timeout and closed the gap to 51-46 midway through the quarter when Barker took over.

She made two free throws, then scored a layup inside, but the Titans still trailed 53-52 with about one minute remaining.

Barker made her mark in the paint all night long, but she stepped outside and nailed a game-winning 3-pointer with 37.7 on the clock. A charity toss with 13.7 ticks left sealed the deal.

“Usually I take a few shots from outside, but early I wasn’t able,” Barker said. “I was a little nervous to take it but I was wide open and we were down and I knew I had to hit it. I was confident I could do that.”

Barker scored nine points in the first half and 17 after the break, finishing with 26. She also netted 5 of 8 from the free-throw line.

“I didn’t say give me the ball; that’s just how it happened, how it was flowing,” Barker said.

Avery Sanders and Olivia Sorenson both scored nine points each for the Titans.

“I just wanted to get the win. Our team was super adamant that we were the better team and should be winning this game,” Barker added.

DAVIS 56, MTN RIDGE 53

KAYSVILLE — Davis trailed 21-20 at the half, then took control with a 23-10 third quarter and held off a Mountain Ridge comeback bid.

T’Maea Eteuati led Davis (11-0) with 21 points on four 3-pointers. Kate Richards scored 13 points and Kendra Kitchen added eight.
