With 47 teams competing from as far away as Montana and Hawaii, girls aged 13-15 battled at four venues throughout Ogden: 4th Street Park, Miles Goodyear Park, Ben Lomond High School and the Weber County Fairgrounds.
Diamond Dogs (Ogden) won the Gold Championship game at 4th Street Park, defeating Boise Blast Cole (Idaho) by run rule, 6-0, to finish the tournament.
Kennadie Blackmer, who pitched at Box Elder High this spring as a freshman, hurled a complete-game shutout, scattering three hits while striking out six and walking two.
“Mostly threw a rise ball. Some girls I threw a couple of curve balls and changeups. Relied on the rise ball and it worked,” Blackmer said of her dominant performance.
Blackmer also played a role on the basepaths, scoring the first run of the game on a wild pitch after holding Boise at bay for the first three innings.
Diamond Dogs added four more unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including a second run by Blackmer — unusual as most teams sub in courtesy runners when pitchers reach base.
“We only had nine today because one of our players is injured, so we don’t have any substitutions,” Blackmer said. “But I’m quick enough that I can get around the bases pretty well.”
In a signature moment of the game, Boise threatened in the top of the fifth inning with a double and a single, putting runners at the corners with one out.
Blackmer struck out the next batter, then Boise shortstop Josie Moorhouse hit a moon shot to deep left-center that left fielder Lyla Leonhardt chased down just a couple of feet from the temporary fence, saving at least two runs.
As often happens in sports, Leonhardt then had an at-bat in the bottom half of the fifth after the great play in the field and promptly doubled with one out. Catcher Ellie Koford singled Leonhardt home and the Diamond Dogs won by run-rule.
Head coach Mandy Koford, who has coached at Roy High, Fremont High and is slated for the top spot at the new West Field High this year, reflected on her team’s victory.
“We wanted to put our hat in the ring and see what we could do. For us to come out on top, that’s what dreams are made of,” she said.
The winners played nine games over the five-day tournament, going 3-1 in pool play and a perfect 5-0 in the Gold Bracket round.
