Utah State announced that Roy native Reid Newey is one of three athletes joining the USU Athletics Hall of Fame in the 2026 class.
At 6-foot-5, Newey became one of the best shooters in Utah high school basketball and graduated from Roy High in 1983, signing on with Utah State. In his final three seasons as an Aggie, Newey averaged 15.9 points and 3.1 assists per game over 90 contests.
As a senior at USU in the 1988-89 season, Newey averaged 19.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in 28 starts. He led the Big West Conference with 98 made 3-pointers, which is still third all-time for a single season at Utah State. He shot 43.8% from the 3-point line and led the Big West at 36.6 minutes per game.
Newey’s 237 career 3-pointers are fourth all-time at Utah State despite the addition of the 3-point line happening after his freshman season.
With 1,536 career points, Newey is No. 13 on USU’s career scoring list for men’s basketball and his career 41.4% mark from behind the arc is 10th all-time for the program.
Newey had a short playing stint in Belgium and got a shot with the Sacramento Kings in Utah’s summer league in 1991, shooting near 50% from the 3-point line, but did not get a further NBA opportunity.
He began teaching at Clearfield High and now has a 35-year career in public education. Newey held several administrative roles for Weber School District and was Davis School District Superintendent from 2016-2022 before taking a role as director for the Syracuse Arts Academy charter school.
Newey just completed his first year in Canyons School District to oversee and direct the district’s under-construction innovations high school in Draper.
Newey joins Chari Hawkins (women’s track and field, 2010-15) and Jennifer Schlott (women’s basketball, 2011-14) as athletes joining the USU Hall of Fame. The school is also inducting the 1960 and 1961 football teams.
Details about the induction ceremony and related honors are yet to be determined.
