5A softball playoff bracket: Box Elder, Bonneville earn first-round byes

A 20-win season and a second-place finish in Region 5 earned Box Elder High softball a No. 4 playoff seed as the UHSAA revealed the state tournament bracket for Class 5A on Thursday morning.

Box Elder (20-4) and No. 7 Bonneville (16-5) eached earned a first-round bye.

As the No. 14 seed, Clearfield (11-13) will host a first-round series at home while No. 21 Roy (5-17) and No. 22 Northridge (5-15) will play on the road.

The top 24 teams in the classification make the bracket. Bracket seeding is determined by an RPI formula that factors winning percentage and strength of schedule.

Spanish Fork (23-2) is the No. 1 seed.

The 5A tournament consists of three stages. The bracket begins with regional play at home sites; seeds 9-24 play a best-of-three series on May 11 and 13. Winners advance to play seeds 1-8 in another best-of-three series May 16-17.

With eight teams remaining, the second stage consists of two double-elimination brackets held May 21-22 at Valley Softball Complex in Taylorsville.

The two teams that emerge from bracket play face off in a best-of-three championship series May 23-24 at BYU.

FIRST ROUND (Best of three, May 11 and 13): No. 19 Wasatch at No. 14 Clearfield, No. 21 Roy at No. 12 West, No. 22 Northridge at No. 11 Maple Mountain

SECOND ROUND (Best of three, May 16-17): No. 13 Cedar Valley/No. 20 Alta at No. 4 Box Elder; No. 10 Olympus/No. 23 Tipview at No. 7 Bonneville
