Prep roundup: Morgan, Ogden boys volleyball reach 3A state semifinals

OREM -- Ogden and Morgan boys volleyball teams both won twice Friday to advance to the 3A state tournament semifinals at Utah Valley University.

The semifinals are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at UVU.

No. 5 Ogden (14-11) faces No. 1 Grantsville (16-8) while No. 6 Morgan (13-8) takes on No. 2 North Sanpete (20-9).

The 3A championship match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Ogden advanced by taking two sweeps. The Tigers started Friday taking down No. 12 Ben Lomond 25-15, 25-12, 25-9, then defeated No. 4 Salt Lake Academy 25-18, 28-26, 25-22.

Morgan swept No. 11 Judge Memorial 25-17, 25-7 25-14 in the morning before needing to rally for a reverse sweep in a five-set upset of No. 3 American Heritage 17-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-15, 15-8.

No. 7 Utah Military Academy-Hill Field (Riverdale) swept No. 10 Freedom Prep in the first round before losing in three sets to No. 2 North Sanpete.

UMA (playing for fifth place) and Ben Lomond (playing for sixth) continue Saturday in consolation play.

No stats were provided for Friday's matches.

SOFTBALL

BEAR RIVER ADVANCES

GARLAND -- No. 7 Bear River (15-8) fell to No. 10 Tooele (17-10) by a score of 11-1 in Game 2 of their second-round series, then won the rubber match 7-1 to advance to 4A double-elimination bracket play.

Katelyn Wilson pitched a complete game in the series finale, allowing one run on one hit while striking out 12. Bella Douglas batted 2 for 3 with a double. Aubree Fry went 2 for 2 and drove in one. Luci Roche, Alex Udy and Oaklie Burton each hit an RBI single.

The Bears will face No. 2 Desert Hills at noon Wednesday, May 15, at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex.

In the Game 2 loss, Douglas hit an RBI single for Bear River. Roche, Kendyl Archibald and Kaya Towne each had a hit.

DAVIS 8, WEBER 6 (8)

PLEASANT VIEW -- Davis scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take an 8-5 lead, then quashed a Weber rally for a region win.

Lauryn Hall batted 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI for Davis (16-4, 8-2 Region 1). Rayleigh Starnes and Jada Chilton each hit an RBI single. Serena Roth pitched all eight innings, giving up nine hits and five earned runs with five walks and six strikeouts.

Logyn Howell batted 2 for 3 with a solo home run and two RBIs for Weber (10-11, 5-5). Moira TInsley added a solo shot. Raegan Blaisdell went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Isabella Bird added a double.

MORGAN ELIMINATED

SPANISH FORK -- Morgan dropped two games at the 3A state tournament and was eliminated, falling 9-3 to Emery and 11-5 to Providence Hall. The Trojans end the season with an 18-10 record.

BASEBALL

BEAR RIVER 3, MTN CREST 0

GARLAND -- Michael Sanchez and Gehrig Marble both batted 2 for 3 and drove in one as No. 5 Bear River shut out No. 12 Mountain Crest (16-12) to sweep their 4A second-round series.

Holden Potter and Brooks Drollinger each had two hits for Bear River (21-6). Potter earned the win on the mound with five hits, two walks and five strikeouts over six innings.

Bear River advances to double-elimination bracket play and faces No. 4 Desert Hills at 7 p.m. Monday, May 13, at Salt Lake Community College.
