Prep football playoff roundup: Bear River claims road upset at Timpanogos

OREM — No. 21 Bear River High football scored on three touchdown passes to grab a 23-17 upset win Friday at No. 12 Timpanogos in the first round of the 4A state playoffs.

Bear River (4-7) got on the board with a 30-yard halfback pass from Tydon Jones to Korver Riley with 8:35 left in the first half. Timpanogos blocked the PAT and the Bears trailed 7-6.

Late in the first quarter, Tatum Stephens took a Theurer toss and turned it into a 32-yard touchdown. Timpanogos (6-5) responded with a touchdown early in the second quarter, and Bear River trailed 14-13 at the half.

The Bears took the lead for good with 9:03 left in the third quarter when Riley got behind the defense and turned a Theurer heave into a 37-yard score. Stone Higley booted a 26-yard field goal with 11:11 left in the game and BR led 23-14.

Timpanogos kicked a 23-yard field goal with 2:44 left. A potential game-tying, long touchdown pass for Timpanogos with 2.4 seconds left was called back on a holding penalty. Dallen Rice sacked the Timpanogos QB as time expired to complete the upset.

Bear River advances to play at No. 5 Park City (9-1) on Friday, Nov. 1.

GRANGER 26, BOX ELDER 23

BRIGHAM CITY — No. 16 Box Elder ran out to a 16-0 lead, then gave up 26 consecutive points in a home loss to No. 17 Granger in the 5A first round.

Carter Buchanan scored all three Box Elder touchdowns. On the game’s first play, Buchanan returned an interception 26 yards for a score. With 5:59 left, Buchanan scored on a 56-yard run and, after consecutive two-point conversions, the Bees led 16-0.

Granger (6-5) scored on a 26-yard pass, a 7-yard run, and a 14-yard fumble return with 2:06 left in the third quarter to take the lead for good at 20-16.

After another Granger score, Carter Buchanan scored the game’s final points on an 8-yard run. Box Elder ends the year with a 4-7 mark.

MTN CREST 36, WEST FIELD 9

HYRUM — Tyce Abbott threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Caymen Kap for No. 23 West Field to cut the lead to 14-7, then No. 10 Mountain Crest (7-3) responded with 21 unanswered points to eliminate the Longhorns in the 4A first round.

West Field ends its inaugural season with a 1-10 record.
