Weber High introduces David Beus as next head boys soccer coach
PLEASANT VIEW — With fall sports off the ground, Weber High made a key spring sports announcement by naming David Beus as the school’s next head boys soccer coach Wednesday via social media.
Beus, assisting former head coach Gavin Flitton’s past three seasons at the helm, takes a big turn in his 14-year coaching career, landing his first head coaching gig. The in-house hire played a role in Weber’s two most-recent state quarterfinal appearances, including last season’s 8-8 (4-6 Region 1) finish with a narrow 4-3 loss at American Fork.
Flitton told the team of his plans to step down ahead of that quarterfinal match and later encouraged Beus to carry the torch and throw his name in the pool of candidates.
“When that happened, I had to really think to myself, ‘Is this something I wanna do?'” Beus said. “I’ve always wanted the opportunity to be a head coach, so when that opportunity came up I thought I would put my name in there and see what happened.”
Weber’s returning senior class is the first freshman class Beus coached when he joined Flitton’s staff in 2022. Beus’ son, Tyson, graduated from Weber in 2023. The Warriors produced two Standard-Examiner All-Area names — senior second-teamer Garrett Graves and junior third-teamer Luke Pack — following a lengthy postseason run.
Beus said his first year in charge brings all sorts of possibilities, especially with the senior class he’ll inherit in his head coaching debut.
“I’m excited about the entire team,” Beus said.
“There’s some (seniors) that I’m super excited to see this out with and I’d like to be able to do something special with that group,” he continued. “We’ve made it to the quarterfinals twice in my three years up there and both times have been heartbreaking losses that I feel like were games that were very close to us winning. … I’d like to see us go further than that this year.”
A team meeting for prospective players and parents is set for Sept. 30 at Weber High School.
