LAYTON — A soccer goal in the ninth minute may not be as exciting or dramatic as a winning score in the 79th minute, but it counts the same on the scoreboard.
West Field sophomore Marissa Hatch punched in a penalty kick at the 30:34 mark of the first half and fellow sophomore keeper Harlie Slaughter and the Longhorn defense made it stand up against Northridge on Thursday.
The Longhorns remained undefeated in Region 5 action with a 1-0 shutout road victory over the Knights.
“It’s definitely a lot of pressure, but I’ve practiced so many; I take PKs regularly so I trust myself. There’s pressure, but I have confidence too,” Hatch said. “I set the ball, look at the keeper and always kick to the left side.
“I was talking to my teammate and she said ‘if you want it, and can make it, then you can have it.’ … I took it and got the finish.”
From there, the West Field (6-2, 3-0 Region 5) defense and Slaughter kept a lid on the Northridge offense, allowing very few shots on goal.
“Our midfield and overall defense worked well as a team and we got the shutout,” Slaughter said. “The last few minutes, I started feeling the pressure because I knew I had to keep the clean sheet; working hard with my defense to keep them out.”
Although the Longhorns were still trying to score, Hatch said there was a point where protecting their lead became a priority.
“Towards the last five-ish minutes, we settled in and started kicking the ball around a little bit to keep it away from them,” Hatch said.
Northridge (3-6, 2-2) has won both of its region games by shutouts, but had the tables turned with the narrow zero-goal game loss.
“We played really well; fought really hard and competed against a top team. We hung with them. It just sucks we couldn’t finish the opportunities we had,” Northridge coach Kenadee Thomas said. “It’s a lot to learn for these girls; they’re so young. This was a chance for them to learn and grow.”
Three games into league play, West Field has lofty aspirations for a second-year school.
“Our goal is to win region and we’re coming hard and working hard every single day to get that,” Slaughter said.
