MORGAN — On senior night, Morgan High girls volleyball coach saw a change in the status quo.
A 3-0 sweep of Layton Christian in the Trojans’ regular-season home match on Thursday, Oct. 14, concluded with a flow of tears and photographs with Morgan’s three outbound seniors.
Team captain and outside hitter Josiyln Jaffa was among the highest in demand.

A native of Morgan, Jaffa had yearned for high school volleyball from an early age. If not at her part-time job at Deb’s Spicey Pie downtown, you’ll have the best luck finding her on the court.

Morgan’s 20 all-time volleyball titles rank first in the state, and much of that success can be attributed to one coach.
The reputation of Liz Wiscombe, owner of a state-high 23 titles (17 at Morgan) and nearly 700 career victories since starting at Delta High School in 1981, was essentially impossible to ignore.
“I’ve definitely grown so much from her just about being a good human or just my confidence level,” Jaffa said of Wiscombe. “She’s just pushed me — she pushes all of us — and it’s helped me with everything else.”
Jaffa was part of Morgan’s last state title, achieved in 2022 when she was just a freshman, biting for minutes amid a 25-6 run and a perfect 10-0 region record — the same mark the Trojans set this season following a 3-0 loss to unbeaten North Sanpete in the 3A title.
Morgan missed title status two years in a row: first falling to No. 1 Emery in a tight, five-set decision, and again in 2023 despite a deep playoff push and 16-15 record (just 5-10 in Region 13).

A perfect, 32-0 North Sanpete program denied Jaffa’s final opportunity for a second title at this year’s 3A title match in Orem. That match included Jaffa’s club teammate and junior Rylee Stewart starting at outside hitter for the Hawks.
“I’m grateful we made it that far,” Jaffa said. “I’m grateful for my team, and I wouldn’t change anything for it. We’ve worked hard for it, and I’m grateful for how that happened.”
Jaffa, in addition to fellow seniors Annabelle Higbee and Kenna Buss, leaves the program in the hands of eight projected returning juniors. Jaffa’s 443 kills, 190 digs, 60 aces, and .264 hitting will be especially missed when Morgan regroups in 2026.
Jaffa produced those numbers while navigating multiple injuries, including her hip, but still managed 733 career kills through it all.
“She’s played with quite a few injuries, but you’d never know it,” Wiscombe said.
But in the end, no stat could match the impact Jaffa had on the girls around her, Wiscombe said.
Morgan’s coach has led hundreds of volleyball players through her system, but when it comes to senior-night receptions, this season’s regular-season finale struck a new tone.
“Of all the years I’ve ever coached, I’ve never seen a senior night like that,” Wiscombe said. “All of the kids, older (or) younger, they all wanted a picture with Josiyln. They loved her. She brought our team together in a way that I’d yet to see us together.”
Jaffa hopes to attend Snow College, but is undecided on her athletic and academic plans at this time.
