WASHINGTON TERRACE  – For a second time this year, Bonneville High School has a new head football coach.

Bonneville introduced Roy High and Utah State alum Connor McGuire as the school’s next head football coach last week, four weeks since Taylor Walkenhorst resigned from the position after just one season and an 0-10 record in his lone year leading the Lakers.

McGuire, taking on his first career head coaching job, served as the offensive coordinator at Roy under head coach Chris Solomona since 2022. McGuire and the Royals chased a state title together as the 5A runner-up in 2024.

Previously, McGuire, a former wide receiver at Utah State and Snow College, coached receivers at Bonneville under former coach Jantz Afuvai, who resigned last March after 12 seasons.

McGuire jumped at the interview for the Bonneville vacancy following the regular season at Roy, finishing 3-7 overall and fourth in Region 5. He came away from his meetings with Bonneville athletic director Rick Corbridge eager about the opportunity in front of him.

“I had my eye on it,” McGuire told the Standard-Examiner on Monday.

“Going to (Bonneville) for the interview, it felt good and now we’re here… I’m excited to bring some of the knowledge that I’ve learned from (Solomona) and Roy over and apply it to a new school, where I’ll have some more decision-making power and can kinda put my little twist on things but keep a lot of the things I’ve loved about Roy in place.”

As a player, McGuire was an All-Region receiver at Roy with 1,050 receiving yards and eight touchdowns across his career. The Royals finished 6-4 during his senior season, former Roy coaching great Fred Fernandes’ first season with the team in 2011.

As of late, football at Bonneville has needed dire repair.

The Lakers haven’t produced more than six wins in a season since 2021; Bonneville’s last winning season campaign, 8-2 in 2020, included the program’s first region title in 18 years.

The move for McGuire comes roughly two months after the end of the regular season. Bonneville’s last search spanned almost five months following Afuvai’s resignation last spring.

“We are excited to welcome Connor McGuire as our new football coach,” Corbridge said.

“Connor brings energy, leadership, and a clear vision for building a strong, competitive program while developing our student-athletes both on and off the field. His passion for the game and commitment to excellence make us confident in the direction of our program, and we look forward to a bright future under his leadership.”

McGuire is Weber County’s newest head coach since Ty Smith accepted the job at Ben Lomond earlier this year.
