Boys golf: Region 5 stars lobbying for state tickets entering September

BRIGHAM CITY – With just three regular-season tournaments to go, the Region 5 boys golf picture is heating up as West Field’s Ethan Luna captured his fourth region victory of the season on Monday at Eagle Mountain.
Luna, a senior and the 5A individual leader with a 65.49 adjusted average, led the field with a 67 (4-under); Luna, Mack Herzog (T-2, 68), and Daxton Seager (T-10, 76) each carded inside the top 10, bolstering a 288-stroke team victory over rival Fremont (299), led by Luke Manning, placing fourth with 71.
Trailing Clearfield’s Drew Brough on the back, Luna penciled in two birdies before a thunderstorm sped up the final pairings of the day in a race to beat the weather as a pattern of northern storms arrived just before the end of Monday’s round.
Off since Aug. 18, Luna said the extra time helped West Field prep for another quality showing in their latest midseason test.
“I think a lot of it is the work we’ve been putting in at practice, and the week that we had off,” Luna said. “I was kinda struggling for a minute, but then I kind of got it back, and I didn’t really make a really good par on nine, made an alright par on 10, but then I birdied 13, and then I birdied 15, and then kind of just sold it.”
He continued:
“I feel like, this year, we’re a lot more locked in practice and maximizing how we practice with purpose,” Luna said. “I love playing with (Herzog). I think all of us are pushing, though, to become a better person and player, so I think that’s a lot of it.”
While Luna leads the state in 5A, the region is complete with competitors driving their way into the conversation as the season enters the home stretch through the month of September. It’ll boil down to a two-day region championship, slated for Sept. 28-29, at Valley View and Lakeside.
Wight seeking his next big bump
For a freshman, Box Elder’s Gavin Wight takes the game quite seriously.
With a club in hand since he was two, Wight popped on the scene this year and hasn’t missed the top 5 in four region appearances last month. On Monday, Wight tied Northridge’s Luke Williams and Fremont’s Camden Hendry for fifth with 73.
For his home course, Wight hoped he’d perform a little better. It was certainly cooler than those previous tournaments, but it was the narrowness of Eagle Mountain that threw off Box Elder’s rising star to begin the week.
“I wasn’t able to take advantage of the Par 5s, and since it was my home course, I wasn’t able to take advantage of that, either,” Wight said. “I didn’t feel my best today, and I couldn’t really get anything started.”
The fifth-ranked golfer in 5A, Wight is looking to set things right for state. He’s capitalized on his short game, the freshman said, and spends much of his time outside of school working on golf with his family. His sister, Taylor, plans on trying out for the girls program.
“I’ve improved a lot on short game this year,” Wight said. “The thing I need to work on is probably irons. I work with my dad (Joe Wight); he used to be a Division I golfer… He and I can go to the (simulator) and just grind it out. He and I have been golfing; the first round was when I was two (years old).”
Wight’s father, Joe, golfed at Box Elder and enjoyed a career at Weber State.
Brough’s career-best game arrives at EM
Clearfield junior Drew Brough, finishing his round with 68 and leading for much of the afternoon, turned in the best scorecard of his career on Monday.
Brough finished the runner-up to a surging Luna, but that same mark gave Grayson Sanders of Bonneville his first victory on the region trail last month at Schneiter’s Bluff, the Falcons’ home course.
“The putter was working good,” Brough said. “That’s what worked best for me.”
Hitting a rhythm around the green, Brough turned in five birdies, including three on the back. He’d ultimately fall a single stroke shy of Luna with a bogey on 17.
A six-year golfer, Brough played Eagle Mountain for just the third time of his career on Monday. Outside of the game, Brough helps pay for his golf game by mowing lawns around his neighborhood.
