OGDEN — Warning to any upcoming opponents of Morgan High girls volleyball: don’t make senior middle blocker Kenna Buss mad.

Morgan started slowly against Ogden on Thursday night, having arrived home from a nonregion match against Dixie, played in Delta, on Thursday morning at 1 a.m.

The Tigers played the Trojans tough and only trailed 24-21 when Buss finally closed the first set with a kill shot.

“We were tired, and I’m like ‘OK, this has got to stop.’ We were fired up. I was pissed; I don’t lose well and I don’t lose, so I got mad,” Buss said. “I’m like, ‘let’s do this; we’re going to win this. We can do better than what we’re doing.’ The message was ‘step it up,’ and they did.”

Morgan rallied in the second set, then coasted to the win, remaining undefeated in Region 12 with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-14) sweep of the Tigers.

In the process, the Trojans (17-4, 8-0 Region 12) won the region championship — three games up on second-place Ogden with two to play — and have not lost even one set in a region match this season.

“When this group of kids gets their back against the wall, that’s when they really start to play hard,” Morgan coach Liz Wiscombe said. “This is a gutty group and they like competition. I’m proud of them.”

Ogden (12-8, 5-3) led 17-15 in the second set when Wiscombe called timeout to rally her troops, but the Tigers were still up 20-18 before Buss got mad again and took over.

“I told them to just keep swinging. Kenna had that look in her eyes, and she was going to serve it out. She served really well at that period when we needed her to,” Wiscombe said.

Buss fired off seven straight service points and the Trojans came from behind to win the second set 25-18.

“There was a bad call made, so I decided every serve is going on; every single one. It’s just a mindset at that point,” Buss said. “You’ve got a whole space out there; a helicopter could land on it. So, a ball can land on that.”

Set three wasn’t as close, but Wiscombe said Ogden had her team’s attention the entire night.

“When we play Ogden, we’re focused. We know they’re a good team; they beat us last year,” Wiscombe said. “We were excited to play them. We never overlooked them. They’re a great team, well coached.”

The Tigers needed a win Thursday to have any chance to claw back into the race for the region championship and now have to do their best to finish the season strong.

“My girls came in with a lot of energy and I’m happy with the adjustments we asked them to make. All we can do is learn from this,” Ogden coach Tim Wright said. “We’re really proud of how we played and excited for the rest of the region matches we have; hopefully stay at three losses in region.”

Libero Halle Brown had 12 digs for the Ogden and Lauretta Taylor smashed eight kills and served four aces.

Stats were not immediately available for Morgan, but Josilyn Jaffa and Ruby Cameron appeared to have big games, in addition to Buss.

“Throughout the season, my blocking has definitely improved and my hitting has gone up,” Buss said. “My setters are getting better, our connection is there and I’m pounding it.”

For those wondering why the Trojans would schedule a game in Delta the night before a key region matchup, it was a makeup game they missed in a tournament in St. George when most of the team came down with stomach flu.

Morgan and Dixie (16-9) wanted to play the game badly enough that they met at a midway point in Delta. It turned out to be a good match and a late night when it went five sets. The Trojans came back from a two-set deficit to capture the win.

“This group is fun to watch. They get excited for each other and play well together,” Wiscombe said. “I think the world of them. I’m grateful to be able to coach them.”
