Prep football roundup: Davis hands American Fork its first loss; Bear River, Morgan open with region wins

AMERICAN FORK — Davis High football outgained American Fork 465-295 and slowly pulled away to hand the Cavemen (5-1) their first loss in a 29-14 decision Friday night.

Tradon Bessinger threw 35 of 46 for 435 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Davis (5-1) offense. Leading 17-7 at the half on Bode Sparrow touchdown receptions of 17 and 20 yards, Bessinger kept the Darts going with a 91-yard drive capped on a 23-yard scoring pass to Jaxton Itaaehau for a 23-7 lead.

Tyson Baggett finished the scoring with a 3-yard TD reception for a 29-7 lead late in the third quarter. Luke Jolley made a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Itaaehau caught nine passes for 143 yards. Sparrow’s eight receptions totaled 101 yards, and he added one interception (returned for 49 yards) and five solo tackles. Ethan Lockwood totaled 11 tackles.

FREMONT 35, NORTHRIDGE 13

LAYTON — Manase Tuatagaloa recorded a 200-100 game, Fremont raced to a 28-13 halftime lead and took care of Northridge on the road.

Tuatagaloa passed 15 of 24 for 249 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 15 times for 104 yards and another TD for Fremont (5-1, 3-0 Regoin 5). Cade Hadley added 81 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Salesi Moa hauled in five catches for 106 yards and Slade Parker caught four passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns.

Triston Mann returned a punt for a Fremont touchdown and Landon Palmer blocked a Northridge punt.

Northridge (1-4, 0-2) did not report stats.

WEST FIELD 34, CLEARFIELD 7

TAYLOR — Easton Eilertson and Gavin Ortegon passed their way past Clearfield.

Eilertson threw 16 of 31 for 215 yards and four touchdowns to lead the West Field (5-1, 3-0 Region 5) offense. Nine catches, 131 yards and three of those touchdowns went to Ortegon. Elijah Woods rushed 21 times for 114 yards. Jaden Fowers caught one touchdown pass. Taylor Scott was 2 for 2 on field goals.

Clearfield (2-4, 0-2 Region 5) did not report stats.

BEAR RIVER 35, TOOELE 14

GARLAND — Glaiden Behrens had a touchdown pass and a touchdown reception as Bear River bested Tooele.

Jaxson Theurer opened the Bear River (2-4, 1-2 Region 11) scoring with a 5-yard quarterback keeper. Rigdon Vonk scored on a 23-yard run and the Bears led 14-0 after one quarter.

Behrens took a pitchout on a reverse, then stopped and heaved the ball to a wide-open Eli Bragger for a 30-yard score. Vonk added a 14-yard scoring scamper, then Behrens hauled in a Theurer 4-yard scoring strike, and BR led 35-0 at the half.

Tooele (2-4, 1-2) capped the scoring with a third-quarter touchdown pass and a 4-yard run with 21 seconds left in the game.

MORGAN 48, UNION 8

MORGAN — Cade Randall, returning from injury, passed for three touchdowns to lead Morgan to a region win over Union.

George Thurston started and ended the Morgan (5-1, 1-0 3A North) scoring with a 27-yard run midway through the first quarter and a 17-yard run with 10:25 left in the game.

Randall tossed a 28-yard scoring strike to Eli Mortensen, a 19-yarder to Brody Peterson and a 1-yard touchdown pass to Kanyon Leonelli. Leonelli added a 4-yard rushing score.

William Pace got the Trojan defense on the board with a 34-yard scoop-and-score fumble return and Morgan led 35-0 at the half.

Union (3-3, 0-1) capped the scoring with a touchdown and two-point conversion as the running clock expired.

Randall finished 10 of 16 for 211 passing yards. Mortensen had four catches for 113 yards.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 29, SOUTH SUMMIT 16

KAMAS — Chris Monroe rushed for two touchdowns and passed for one, and the state’s leading rusher, Trevor Halalilo, ran for another score as Layton Christian grabbed a win at South Summit.

After spotting South Summit a 7-0 lead on a 26-yard interception return, Monroe got Layton Christian (4-2) on the board with a 4-yard run at the 1:31 mark of the first quarter. South Summit scored midway through the second quarter and led 14-7 at the half.

A Monroe 16-yard run and a two-point conversion gave the Eagles the lead for good. Thomas Vito took a Monroe pass 23 yards to the house, and another two-point conversion capped LCA’s scoring.

MTN RIDGE 61, BOX ELDER 7

HERRIMAN — Box Elder gave up two 50-plus-yard touchdowns and a safety to trail Mountain Ridge (4-2) by a 30-0 score after one quarter on the way to a lopsided loss, the Bees’ first defeat of the season.

Judd Howells ran in a 35-yard touchdown rush in the second quarter to get Box Elder (5-1) on the board.

LOGAN 20, OGDEN 14

LOGAN — Blake Weston scored on a 1-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as Ogden fell at Logan (2-4, 1-0 3A North) to open region play.

Gavin Schreve gave Ogden (4-2, 0-1) a 7-0 lead when he returned an interception 81 yards for a score.

COALVILLE — Reese Ahlstrom scored twice in the second half to force extra time on Thursday, but Utah Military Academy-Hill Field (3-9, 1-6 Region 16) fell 2-0 in a shootout at North Summit (1-10, 1-3).
