OGDEN — Ogden High boys volleyball hasn’t faced Logan on its regular 3A North region schedule, having swept the Grizzlies earlier this year in a pre-region tournament.
So forgive Ogden coach Tim Wright for his excitement when he noted the Tigers have defeated all their region rivals after they drubbed Morgan 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 in a home contest Tuesday night.
“This was a big game. We’ve been through the rest of the region. Morgan was undefeated … they’re always a big challenge,” Wright said. “We came excited, ready to play. It feels good playing all the teams in our region and coming up with the wins so far.”
The Tigers play Logan in region play Thursday and have not lost a single set to a league opponent this season.
Sophomore outside hitter Trayven Olivieri made the winning hit (point No. 25) in all three sets for the Tigers.
“I always try my hardest to do what I can with it; my setter put me in position at the end and I had to put it away,” Olivieri said.
Ogden (9-4, 3-0 3A North) eked out a win in the opening set after leading 24-20 before finally quelling a Morgan (7-9, 2-1) rally.
“In the first, set we started very slow. Coming back from spring break, we had a few players who weren’t feeling well yesterday and weren’t able to practice much, so this is their first night touching the ball in a while,” Wright said. “It took a bit to get back into rhythm, trust each other again … then one player got hurt for a second, and that threw off our rhythm.”
That injured player was freshman setter James Taukiuvea, who stepped in front of a kill shot by Morgan’s Kevin Wangsgard and was knocked to the floor, taking the ball violently to the side of his head.
Taukiuvea returned in the second set after being cleared by a trainer and finished with five kills, seven assists, two aces and seven digs.
“Once we found that chemistry, we were able to stick with it and play how we normally do,” Wright said.
Sets two and three were pretty much all Ogden, aided by a big overall game from senior outside hitter Keen Crowther. He had 13 kills, eight digs and three blocks for the Tigers on the night.
“The sets were good. I love hitting the ball; best thing ever, better than defense … better than everything. I try my best everywhere,” Crowther said. “It was a team effort. If we keep playing like this, keep this chemistry, we’re going to do good.
“Wangsgard is a really good player, but we adjusted to him and played our game,” Crowther said.
Senior libero Aiden Holbrook chipped in with two aces, three assists and 12 digs for the Tigers.
Wangsgard, a senior, and his sophomore brother Nate led Morgan with seven kills each.
Junior Max Warr added six blocks and junior libero Caleb Stephens went low with 16 digs for the defending 3A title holders.
“We’ve got to start believing in ourselves. Most of our group is coming back from the state championship team last year and we have some newcomers we’re excited about,” Morgan coach Kyle Komenda said. “Playing against tough competition pushes the envelope a little bit. We just have to find a way to keep the ball on the court.”
Whatever the schedule throws at Ogden, Wright was optimistic after Tuesday’s match.
“A sweep feels really good. Morgan is always a great team. Having a rough start and still being able to sweep is great,” Wright said.
