ROY — Roy High captain Carden Schieb was responsible for five goals, a mark without a specific term in lacrosse, unlike a hat trick (3) or a haul (4), but it doesn’t take a scholar to define just how meaningful they were on Wednesday.

Bonneville’s late chase wasn’t enough to overturn Roy’s lead and Schieb, a sophomore, bolstered his side’s 13-8 victory with four first-half goals in a midweek region contest. It’s Roy’s first home win of the campaign, and their first since March 6 at Mountain View.

Schieb, finding the net twice inside the final three minutes of the first half, set Roy (2-6, 1-3 Region 5) up with a seven-point lead at the half. Help from Tyler Dickson (four goals) saw that number remain intact to begin the fourth quarter.

The Lakers caught fire thanks in part to senior attacker Major Nicholls, who drew a fourth-quarter hat trick and thinned Roy’s lead to as little as four with 1:15 to play.

“I just felt like we needed to hold the ball better,” Schieb said. “That last quarter was kind of rough, but we stayed in it and it felt good.”

Roy is rebooting after losing their former coach, Zach Colohan, to West Field last season. In his place, James Dickson is in his second season with the program and searching for an improved record this spring after last year’s 4-14 finish.

And to his credit, the youngest of the Royals are getting their noses into the action.

Sophomore DJ Reyes, adding his seventh goal of the season, and freshman Keldon Robinett, adding his ninth, each finished with two goals apiece Wednesday.

“It’s been a struggle this season to string together consecutive, good quarters,” James Dickson said. “I thought we did pretty well this game, we were able to kind of take control a little bit on offense, hold the ball, and then make some shots when we needed to.

“It’s just about giving them confidence. Mostly the team’s new, within a year or two, and it’s about giving them confidence and then teaching them the game of lacrosse.”

Likewise, Braden Weloth, hired at Bonneville in January as the school’s boys lacrosse coach, is merely looking for kids who are grasping the fundamentals and putting the ball in the net.

The Lakers (2-6, 1-2) haven’t won more than eight games in a season since Utah sanctioned lacrosse as a sport six years ago.

Even so, Bonneville, anchored by senior defenseman Jacob Smith and powered up top with four late goals by Nicholls and senior Peyton Redd, made things scary.

“The biggest thing I tell the boys is don’t think about it,” Weloth said. “Go out there and play ball. Play lacrosse, have fun, and in practice, they look amazing. I think a lot of (players) get in the game and they complicate it too much. They kind of stress themselves out, and those last four or five minutes … they just went out, played ball and that’s the result.

“Four goals in three minutes.”

In the end, five different Lakers — including Parker Nichols, Wade Wayman and Braxton Henstra — found the net against a Roy defense that held them to just three goals in the first half. It’s not a win, but it’s an attitude Weloth can get behind.

“Practices are huge and positive,” Weloth said. “We like to keep it upbeat. I just like to preach it from the beginning of the season. I just tell them, like, positivity will guide you way further into the season than anything else will.”

With one region win apiece, Bonneville and Roy each look ahead to Friday contests in hopes of drawing another April victory. The Lakers host region leader West Field and Roy heads to winless Clearfield.
