Prep notebook: Roy High alum, Montana lineman signs with Canadian pro squad

Panfiloff signed a two-year contract with the Montreal Alouettes on Tuesday, according to a release by his agent.
Represented by Marine Prince, Panfiloff is signing with Montreal with the potential to pursue a career in the NFL later.
“Cannon has the opportunity to be drafted on Day 3 of the NFL Draft and now has a backup plan as well,” says Prince.
Panfiloff, who started at Utah Tech in 2020 and later transferred to Montana as a redshirt sophomore in 2023, is coming off his biggest season yet. The Roy alum anchored a front that allowed just 23 sacks, the fewest by a Montana team in the last decade.
As a Royal, Panfiloff was First Team All-Region and lettered in track.
Panfiloff, a First Team All-Big Sky offensive lineman and recipient of the Paul Weskamp Award, saw 4,437 total snaps and supported 11,342 total rushing yards between his two stops. Panifiloff helped guide the Grizzlies into the FCS semifinals last season.
Montreal enters the 2026 season fresh off a 10-8 finish and a 25-17 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Grey Cup.
Fremont alum lands with Pepperdine hoops
Penn State volleyball star and Fremont High alum Maggie Mendelson will finish her college career with a bit of a role change.
Mendelson signed with Pepperdine University in Los Angeles County, California, for women’s basketball on Monday following a prolific volleyball career that included the 2024 national title as an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and middle blocker at Penn State.
At Fremont, Mendelson lettered in basketball and volleyball, and signed with Nebraska out of high school in 2022 to play both sports. She represented the United States in basketball and volleyball as well. Her parents, Phil and Jenny Mendelson, each played basketball at Weber State.
Ross reaches 100 career wins at Clearfield
Clearfield High baseball coach Steve Ross reached 100 career victories with a 12-4 home win over Roy last week. The Falcons swept the Royals to claim the series and begin this week with an eighth straight win over Northridge.
Ross has been a member of the coaching staff since graduating in 1992 and stepped up to the full-time head coaching job in 2016. In season No. 10, the Falcons are 8-9 overall and third in Region 5 (7-3).
