The son of Lancers head boys basketball coach Kelby Miller, Karter is headed for his final prep season averaging 14.1 points, 4.6 boards and 4.6 assist per game in his career as Layton’s do-it-all point guard. The younger Miller crossed the 1,000-points threshold as a junior in January.

Miller’s decision rivals in-state offers by Utah and Weber State, among others.

CSU-Fullerton competes in the Big West Conference, the new home for Utah Valley for basketball starting this season. Longtime Titans head coach Dedrique Taylor led his program to two league titles in 2018 and 2022; Taylor was named the 2026 Big West Coach of the Year following an 18-16 finish and 12-8 mark in conference play.

It’s a big last ride ahead for Miller, who led 6A with points (22.1), assists (6.2), rebounds (5.6), and steals (2.6) during the 2025-26 season. He’ll be Layton’s key returner, as the team moves forward with the loss of seniors Chase Randall, Jack Godderidge, Nic Anderson and small forward Tage Allen.

Last year’s Layton squad reached a co-region title with Davis, but No. 13 Lehi bounced the No. 4 Lancers from the 6A bracket at home in the second round of the state tournament. Lehi fell to defending champion and No. 1 Westlake in the state semifinals.

Layton tips off its 2026-27 regular-season schedule at Viewmont on Nov. 20.
