LAYTON – It’s been a fun couple of weeks for West Field boys lacrosse.
Utah has experienced a rather wet spring, and, while the two aren’t at all mutually exclusive, the Longhorns have seemingly washed away any woes stemming from an 0-4 start to the regular season last month.
Over the weekend, West Field hung its fifth consecutive win since April 10, a 16-3 road win at Northridge to claim the pair’s region series on Friday. Freshman attacker Gavin Clarke tallied a match-high six goals, and the Call cousins, Hudson and Taden Call, combined for seven more.
Up by just four at halftime, the Call combo phoned up five goals in the last seven minutes of the third quarter to blow the doors open on youthful Northridge. Brekken Green, Cy Nielson and Micah Olsen strung together all three goals for the Knights, finding the net just once in the second half.
“We’re looking really good right now,” West Field senior goalkeeper Carter Thornock said. “I’m always just getting better at communication, sliding faster, clearing the ball with patience, stuff like that. But right now, I’d say we look pretty good right now.”
The Longhorns are allowing opponents 5.2 goals per game, including just 10 total allowed through their last five games. Likewise, West Field, tallying no fewer than 15 goals through its last five outings, is cashing in on the defensive backbone of seniors like Thornock and captain Tyson Clarke.
It’s growth, Thornock says, and the guys around him are close because of their five losses, including a 13-2 road loss at Park City on April 8, which sits in the rearview with just three region dates and four total games to go.
West Field, now a member of 5A Region 5, is chasing a second region title since posting one in 4A Region 11 last spring under former Roy coach Zach Colohan. The Longhorns fell one game shy of the state semifinals.
“We’ve really improved on being able to rally after something bad happens,” Thornock said. “In the past, like the start of the season, it was kind of rough. We were in a shaky spot. We’d go down a few goals, and the whole team would get flat. I think we’ve just gotten better at rallying, bringing each other up, being a better team.”
West Field enters the week with an opportunity to net two more wins: one in region play and another against a neighboring foe.
On Wednesday, the Longhorns will travel to Brigham City for a tough follow-up with second-place Box Elder, standing a single game behind West Field (9-5, 9-0 Region 5) in the region race and 11-3 overall this season.
Last time around, Colohan’s squad put 11 goals on the Bees at home. The focus, though, remains inward.
“We’re not worried about proving we’re better than anyone,” Colohan said.
“We just want to keep working ourselves. We’ve gotta focus on what we do well, not on what everyone else does… I think they’ve started to trust each other a little more. They’ve figured out, in a big loss like that, you want to fight for each other, or you want to fight with each other.”
After Box Elder, West Field hosts Weber (Friday), Bonneville (May 6), and closes the regular season at home against Roy (May 8).
