BRIGHAM CITY — Witten Eddings threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jett Jeppsen with 4:37 left in the fourth quarter to trigger Utah’s new mercy rule and end the game as Box Elder High football bested Deseret Peak in a 49-0 home shutout.

Kadyn Reyes passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more to lead Box Elder (1-0). Rhet Richards took a Reyes pass 53 yards to paydirt to open the scoring. Reyes connected with Cammon Bushnell for a 23-yard score. Bridger Richards scored on a 1-yard scamper and Reyes added a 23-yard rushing score, and the Bees led 27-0 after one quarter.

Reyes scored on a 7-yard run midway through the second quarter, then Mack Davis tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Trace Tucker to give BE a 40-0 lead with 2:18 left in the first half. Tytan Hupp booted a 42-yard field goal with 10:27 left in the fourth quarter.

Utah’s new football mercy rule ends the game at the end of the third quarter, or any time in the fourth quarter, when the margin reaches 44 points.

WOODS CROSS 27, SYRACUSE 26

WOODS CROSS — Syracuse scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but a failed PAT and a stopped two-point conversion left the Titans one point short at Woods Cross.

Ledger Wight threw three touchdown passes in the loss for Syracuse (0-1): to Bowen Metcalfe for 18 yards in the fourth quarter, to Parker Moffat for 8 yards in the second quarter, and to Kaleb GHall for 38 yards in the first.

Kao Prom punched in a 1-yard TD rush with 1:54 left but Woods Cross stopped Syracuse’s go-ahead, two-point try just shy of the goal line.

TIMPVIEW 40, LAYTON 21

LAYTON — Tillman Thomas passed for three touchdowns but it wasn’t enough as Layton fell at home to Timpview.

Layton (0-1) earned first blood as Miles Neuteboom converted a 41-yard field goal. Thomas found Harper Fullmer for a 40-yard scoring strike in the third quarter to get Layton trailing 20-9 with 8:37 left in the third quarter.

After Timpview built a 40-9 lead, Drew Godderidge caught two Thomas touchdown passes, the first for 23 yards and the second from 16 yards out to cap the scoring with 3:33 left in the game.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 48, HUNTER 0

LAYTON — Colton Johns tossed four touchdown passes to four different receivers and Layton Christian Academy shut out Hunter in a game called after the third quarter via mercy rule.

Johns connected with Jahmi Harrison-Bismillah for a 35-yard touchdown to get LCA (1-0) on the board on the game’s first offensive play. Chris Munroe scored on a 4-yard run and Johns also threw a 75-yard touchdown to Roy transfer Synic Harvey late in the first.

Munroe scored his second touchdown on a 21-yard run and the Eagles led 28-0 as the first quarter clock expired.

Harvey took an interception 89 yards to the house early in the second quarter. With 3:48 left in the first half, Johns tossed a 12-yard scoring strike to Memphis Hunkin and LCA led 41-0.

Johns found Djaylan Gomes in the corner of the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown to cap the scoring with 1:38 left in the first half. A third-quarter running clock ticked until LCA forced an incomplete pass in the end zone as the quarter expired, which ended the game.

RIDGELINE 42, MORGAN 28

OGDEN — Morgan’s Krew Asay returned two interceptions for touchdowns but defending 4A state champion Ridgeline used a bruising run game to hand the Trojans a season-opening loss in a game that was moved from Morgan to Weber State.

Midway through the first quarter, Asay picked off Ridgeline and took the pass 42 yards to the house to give Morgan a 7-0 lead. Ridgeline responded with four rushing touchdowns and one passing score.

Owen Gilson tossed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Rhett Larson, then Asay added a 32-yard pick-six to make the score 35-21 with 2:36 left in the third. GIlson found George Thurston for a 4-yard touchdown for the final score with 10 seconds left in the game.
