Weber High coach Landon Cosby instructs his team from the sideline during a region boys basketball contest on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, at Layton High School in Layton.PLAIN CITY – Fremont High brought its 15-day coaching search to an end over the weekend, with Landon Cosby being introduced as the school’s next head boys basketball coach.
Cosby, coming off his seventh season at 6A Weber High, will be the next leader of the Silverwolves after the team parted with longtime coach Corey Melaney, following a new directive by the Weber School District preventing athletic directors from holding head coaching roles at their respective schools.
Looking for a new challenge, Cosby applied for the Fremont opening after learning of the vacancy.
“I’ve met a lot of great people, and I’ve had great support up here,” Cosby said of Weber. “I’m very excited for this new chapter, and I’m excited to see what we can do out of Fremont and continue to build a program that has some great tradition and obviously following a great coach.”
Melaney finished 230-189 in 17 seasons at Fremont, including five region titles and the 6A state title in 2020. Melaney will continue to serve as the school’s athletic director, he told the Standard-Examiner earlier this month.
Cosby jumps 20 minutes west in a lateral move that keeps him within the school district while creating a fresh start for the Ogden native and Weber State alum. Cosby played high school ball at Bonneville and Ben Lomond.
In seven seasons, Cosby produced four winning campaigns (2024-25, 2023-24, 2020-21 and 2019-20). Before his prep coaching career, Cosby spent time at Weber State, Northern Arizona and Division II Westminster.
Cosby led Weber to a 7-17 (0-8 Region 1) finish this year.
Fremont scheduled a meet-and-greet with Cosby for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. inside the school’s lecture hall.
LCA names Burton full-time girls coach
Layton Christian Academy promoted Mark Burton to its full-time girls basketball coach over the weekend, following the team’s first-ever 3A state title last month.
Burton, the founder of Burton Basketball Academy in Pleasant View, took up the opportunity to lead the school’s girls program midseason when Jarrod Hoagland stepped away from the job over winter break.
Burton formerly served as an assistant coach for the LCA boys team, and his son, Mark Burton Jr., played for the Eagles before taking his career overseas.
West Field names Alverson next girls coach
West Field named Matt Alverson its next head girls basketball coach over the weekend, following the resignation of Rick Stoekl.
Matt is the son of former Bonneville High coach Gary Alverson, who led the Lakers to two state championships in 1985, 1987, and another at Tooele in 2005 shortly before his death.
The younger Alverson takes up his first head coaching role following previous stops at Clearfield, Bonneville and Roy.
West Field flirted with its first-ever winning season at 11-13 in the final season of Stoeckl’s two-year tenure (11-13) in Taylor. Stoeckl led the Longhorns to their first-ever playoff win a year ago.
Bonneville’s DeGroot sets new 400-meter record
Bonneville High track star Davis DeGroot is shaping up for a big senior sendoff.
DeGroot broke the 400-meter dash record with a 45.46 final time at the Pine View Invitational over the weekend. Maple Mountain alum Banks Jackson set the previous record (46.05) in 2024.
Several programs from around Weber County will descend on Roy High School for the annual City-County Championships, beginning Tuesday and running through Wednesday.
Saunders commits to Snow College
Morgan High senior Bracken Saunders announced his commitment to Snow College for basketball last week.
Saunders finished his Trojan career as the school’s all-time scoring leader with 1,530 career points. The First Team All-Area selection was a key part of Morgan’s second consecutive 3A state title.
Saunders and Morgan were also tabbed the Standard-Examiner’s All-Area Boys Basketball Team of the Year two years running.
