Day 1 action: Distance runners stack personal bests to begin annual event

ROY — Weber High’s Josh Hamblin is no stranger to record-breaking runs.

The seven-time Utah state champion is certainly off to a familiar start, winning three events and placing second in another on the final day of the annual City-County track and field meet on Wednesday at Roy High School.

Hamblin claimed first place in the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and as part of Weber’s 4×400-meter relay. His run of 35.92 in the 300 hurdles is a new all-classifications state record, pending approval, beating his own best as the first in state history to go sub-36 seconds in the event.

He finished second individually in the 200-meter dash behind none other than Bonneville High’s Davis DeGroot, who recently set the state record in the 400-meter dash.

DeGroot’s time to beat Hamblin in the 200 was his own all-classifications state record at 20.68, besting a Jerome Myles (Corner Canyon) 2024 run of 20.84.

Last week, Hamblin eclipsed his personal record in the 110-meter hurdles at the Tri-Utah Super Meet in Farmington with a final time of 13.59. On Wednesday, Hamblin won the same event with a final time of 13.73 on Roy’s track.

“It’s been pretty good so far,” Hamblin said. “I went to nationals indoor and then ran like literally right as I got back in the meet, and then I destroyed my (personal record).”

Hamblin was the subject of debate at last year’s state track championships, where the UHSAA notably reversed the then-junior’s disqualification following his first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. Two first-place medals were distributed to Hamblin and to Caleb Flint of Davis.

Earlier this year, Hamblin set the meet record in the 60-meter boys hurdles at the Simplot Indoor Games in Pocatello, Idaho.

Two meets into his final season of outdoor track, Hamblin is chasing a feeling — not records — as he looks for a fourth state championship in the 300-meter hurdles and beyond.

“I’m pretty passionate about it because it’s my area, too,” Hamblin said. “I’m just trying to get out here, run a clean race and that’s it. I’m not trying to worry about time, just have good form and stay smooth.”

Weber claims both ends of the meet

Weber High claimed nine total events — seven individual victories, as well as the boys and girls 4×400-meter relay races — to emerge as the first-place team of the meet on Wednesday.

On the girls side, Sadie Fletcher won the 100- and 200-meter sprints. Jade Kulpa won the 300-meter hurdles, while Abigail Hall won the shot put.

For the boys, Josh Hamblin produced three gold medals in the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and as part of the 4×400-meter relay. Wyatt Rich won the 3,200-meter run.

The Warriors finished this year’s City-County meet with 326 combined points.

Ogden claims boys, girls sprint medleys

The Ogden High sprint medley teams (200, 200, 400, 800) claimed both the boys and girls races on Wednesday.

In the girls race, Ogden — comprised of Hadlee Tribe, Livie Furton, Olivia Geddes and Avery Barton — produced a final time of 4:28.58, roughly 20 seconds faster than Weber.

On the boys end, the Tigers produced another victory with a final time of 3:49.69 set by Jack Thompson, Nash Bockwoldt, Blake Weston and Daniel Ekstrom.

Elsewhere, Ogden enjoyed individual victories by Avery Barton in the girls 800- and 3,200-meter races — though, due to UHSAA transfer rules, her results did not qualify to score team points or for potential records.

Fremont dominates 400 meters

Hadley Hansen (girls) and Slade Parker (boys) each represented Fremont High well with first-place finishes in the 400-meter races on Wednesday.

Beau Jenkins, winning the boys 800-meter with a final time of 1:57.56, and Charleigh Hawkins, setting a personal record of 111 feet, 6 inches in girls discus, added two more individual victories before the day was done. The Silverwolves also finished winning the 4×100 and 4×200-meter relays.
