Prep roundup: Baseball, softball playoffs get underway Thursday for Northern Utah teams

BASEBALL

BEAR RIVER 4, PINE VIEW 1

GARLAND — No. 6 Bear River scored all four runs in the third inning in a Game 1 win Thursday over No. 11 Pine View (12-15) in a 4A first-round series.

Ethan Higgs hit a three-run home run for Bear River (18-6) and Chipper Hawes hit an RBI single. Stephen Starnes got the win with 10 strikeouts, allowing one earned run on three hits over six innings.

GRANTSVILLE 10, BEN LOMOND 0

GRANTSVILLE — No. 15 Ben Lomond was held to one hit in a five-inning Game 1 loss in a 3A first-round playoff series at No. 2 Grantsville (21-4).

Isaiah Long got the hit for Ben Lomond (2-14) and Kai Langston drew a walk.

CARBON 12, MORGAN 5

MORGAN — No. 6 Morgan gave up 10 runs across the fourth and fifth innings in a home loss to No. 11 Carbon (9-16) in Game 1 of a 3A first-round playoff series.

Karson Black, Marcus Trease and Owen Gilson each had two hits for Morgan (15-11). Gilson hit a triple and drove in one, Trease had two RBIs and Black hit a double.

MANTI 10, OGDEN 6

MANTI — No. 13 Ogden scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 7-5, then No. 4 Manti (16-9) answered with three runs in the bottom half to take control and win Game 1 of a 3A first-round playoff series.

Denver Rhodes batted 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Ogden (7-19). Rodrigo Torres went 2 for 4 and drove in one. Cristian Martinez hit an RBI single and Easton Green drove in two.

FARMINGTON 4, LAYTON 3

SOUTH JORDAN — Region 1 champion Layton gave up an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walkoff loss against Farmington (8-17, 6-6 Region 1) in a game played at The Ballpark at America First Square.

Cruz Hinkle hit a single and drove in two for Layton (18-7, 10-2). Nik Bielaczyc batted 3 for 4. Will Hoffman and Burkon Beus each hit a single.

WEST FIELD 11, CLEARFIELD 3

TAYLOR — Bryce Bagby hit a grand slam to lead West Field to a region win over Clearfield to finish the regular season Wednesday.

Jarett Hill batted 2 for 4 with a triple, a double and an RBI for West Field (21-4, 17-1 Region 5). Brady Penland went 2 for 3 and drove in one. Luke Penland and Grady Garrett each hit an RBI single. Marshal Moon got the win with 11 hits, three earned runs and five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Christian Taylor batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Clearfield (12-13, 11-7). Brodie Deal and Brody Mower each had two hits. Chase Marriott hit an RBI single.

BEAR RIVER 17, TIMPANOGOS 2

GARLAND — No. 2 Bear River blasted No. 15 Timpanogos (16-10) with seven runs in the first inning and nine in the second for a three-inning win in Game 1 of a 4A second-round super regional series.

Landyn Gamble hit a triple and a double and drove in five for Bear River (22-6). Marley Tisdale hit two doubles with two RBIs. Paycie Richards hit a two-run triple. Samantha Theurer drove in two. Kate Wilson got the win with four hits and five strikeouts.

BINGHAM 4, DAVIS 2

KAYSVILLE — Davis was held to five hits in a nonregion home loss Thursday to Bingham.

Ella Nielson batted 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Davis (22-6). Norah Sunderland, Serena Roth and Jewel Korth each hit a single. Sunderland and Korth scored one run apiece. Cambell Christensen took the loss, giving up five hits, including a three-run home run, and striking out three in three innings.

WEST FIELD 13, DAVIS 2

TAYLOR — West Field led 2-1, then scored nine runs in the fourth inning to take control in a five-inning win over Davis on Wednesday.

Ellie Koford, Brylee Leatherwood and Rylee Andreasen each had three hits for West Field (18-6). Koford hit a triple and a double and drove in three. Andreasen hit a triple with one RBI. Leatherwood hit a double and drove in three. Brinklee Hadley pitched a complete game with six hits, one earned run and two strikeouts.

Jewel Korth hit a solo home run for Davis (22-5). Norah Sunderland hit a double and scored a run.
