KAYSVILLE — It took a second for Jaxon Pehrson’s arm to get warmed up, but once Corner Canyon’s 6-foot-2 starting quarterback caught a spark, he wasn’t giving it up.
The defending 6A state champions — now under the leadership of Casey Sutera following Eric Kjar’s career shift to Weber State — turned the ball over twice and trailed 6-0 with 9 minutes to go in the second quarter of Friday’s season opener at Davis.
Utah commit Jaxton Itaaehau reeled in a one-handed, 13-yard touchdown pass from Saint John Bosco (California) transfer Brodie Scheinberg for the first points of the game, and it’d appear the Chargers had themselves a contest in front of them up just 7-6 at halftime.
It’d become one of just two touchdowns scored by the Darts in a 51-14 home loss; the other was hauled in by Oklahoma commit Bode Sparrow (11 receptions, 100 yards) late into the night.
“I know that’s not who we were,” Itaaehau said. “It’s about fixing the mistakes we know. To come out like that after a good first half, it’s bad and it’s not who we are. We don’t want that reputation of the north can’t run with the south, and I think we just proved that right, so it’s up to us to bounce back and make a run.”
Fellow Ute-to-be Diesel Dart tallied 123 receiving yards and two touchdowns, including a 63-yarder before halftime to give the Chargers (1-0) a narrow lead.
Davis, seemingly marching toward another touchdown drive before the break, missed out when Scheinberg suffered a heavy sack via Wyatt Warner, and his fourth-down try ended up in the hands of defender Burnham Sudweeks in the end zone as the first half expired.
Scheinberg, sacked three times Friday, finished the night 25 of 40 for 182 yards, two touchdowns and one pick in his Davis debut. Pehrson completed 76% (10 of 13) of his attempts for 206 yards, three touchdowns and one interception (the pick coming from Davis senior Sam Coleman during the first half).
Of his new quarterback, Peery said those first-week wrinkles are adjustable, and, without revealing much, said he has notes from Friday’s loss to bring into the classroom next week.
“(Scheinberg)’s just settling in a little bit,” Peery said. “We saw flashes of it, and we’ll continue to work on that.”
The Chargers benefited from two major chunk plays — a 32-yard run by Jackson Carruth and a 50-yard catch by Deagan Mason — to begin the second half with two red-zone scores (one a handoff to Dart and another a short pass to Carter Kjar).
All of a sudden, the pad level that pushed Corner Canyon back in the first half appeared absent as the Chargers piled 30 unanswered points on Davis in the third quarter, including an 82-yard TD scamper by Pehrson and a 65-yard punt return for six by Josh Harris.
The dominoes simply fell, and Scheinberg left his first Utah high school football game convinced he must do better for himself and his teammates, the newcomer said. Particularly, Scheinberg said he’s eager to improve his blitz reading and communication with the offensive line.
“I think I’ve definitely got some things to clean up,” Scheinberg said. “I think if we see them again, it’ll be a different outcome, for sure. We’ve got to keep playing at our highest level and we started to fade a little bit, and part of that’s on me.”
Despite Friday’s result, Scheinberg still has the faith of one of the program’s key leaders in Itaaehau.
“He’s that kind of player, and I think tonight’s showing isn’t who he is. And I think he still played well through the adversity,” Itaaehau said. “I’m excited to get behind him, rally behind him and I think he can still lead us to a championship.”
