Brady Famuliner, a 17-year-old West Field student living with Down syndrome, signed his 1-day contract with the Utah Archers of the Professional Lacrosse League on Thursday at the Zions Bank Training Facility in Herriman.

HERRIMAN — It didn’t take long for a West Field High School lacrosse star to find the pros.

Brady Famuliner, a 17-year-old junior with Down syndrome, signed a one-day contract with the Utah Archers of the Professional Lacrosse League on Thursday after meeting with the team.

The Archers named Famuliner the team’s honorary captain for Saturday’s home contest against the Denver Outlaws after Brady’s mother, Christine, shared a now-viral video of Brady’s ceremonial goal during West Field’s 17-2 home win against Fremont last month.

“I didn’t think we would ever be standing here doing this,” Christine Famuliner said. “I’m just a mom who posts on social media so my family, friends, and family across the country could see what our family is doing.”

Brady has long considered himself a lacrosse superfan and has followed Utah’s professional team since its founding in 2019. The PLL, which works on a touring model, sees this season arrive with a Friday opening at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.

The Famuliners have a bit of lacrosse history, too. Brady’s older brother, Carson, played at Fremont, and their father, Conn, who serves as the emcee for all West Field home games, stepped up with his fellow dads to coach their local youth teams when his sons were younger.

“My son had a lacrosse stick in his hand before dad ever did,” Conn Famuliner said. “Being able to continue to grow the sport here in Utah is what’s important to me. I want more and more kids to embrace how cool lacrosse is as a sport and how fun it is to play. You know, I wish it had been here and available when I was a kid. This is what I would have played.”

Beginning this school year, Brady transferred from Fremont to West Field after his older brother graduated from Fremont last spring. Carson and Brady spent just two years together in high school due to Brady’s condition.

To line the contest up with Fremont, Christine Famuliner said, was a special treat for both schools. West Field, coached by Zach Colohan, set the stage for Brady to score a goal during the April home game.

“We’ve always had this dream of Brady being able to score a goal, and I don’t know who was more excited about it: us or Zach,” Christine Famuliner said.

Earlier this week, West Field clinched its second consecutive region title, and its first as a member of 5A Region 5, since first opening its doors last year.
