Prep roundup: Roy baseball sweeps Kearns in 5A first round series

A Roy High ballcap rests on the bench of the home dugout during a nonregion baseball contest on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Roy High School in Roy.KEARNS — Cache Summers drove in three runs from the No. 9 spot, including the walk-off game-winner, as No. 22 Roy High baseball defeated No. 11 Kearns 4-3 in eight innings for a Game 2 win Saturday, claiming the 5A first-round regional series 2-0.
Jace Barela, who pitched a complete game for Roy (12-15), singled to lead off the eighth and came around to score on a Summers infield single, sending the Royals to the next round. Barela allowed one earned run on six hits, striking out five and walking two in eight innings.
Kruz Williams hit 3 for 3 at the plate for Roy. Summers, Barela and Lincoln Baty each had two singles.
Roy advances to a second-round super regional series (best of three) at No. 6 West Jordan. Game 1 is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 13. Game 2 (and Game 3, if necessary) would follow the next day.
SPRINGVILLE 5, CLEARFIELD 4
CLEARFIELD — No. 16 Clearfield scored four runs in the first inning but only managed three hits, losing Game 2 and the 5A first-round regional series 2-0 to No. 17 Springville (10-16).
Elijah Rosario drove in three runs for Clearfield (12-15). Brodie Deal doubled while Rosario and Christian Taylor singled for the Falcons.
Springville pushed across the winning run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly.
WOODS CROSS 8, BOX ELDER 3
WOODS CROSS — No. 19 Box Elder led 3-2 after three frames but couldn’t hold on, dropping Game 2 on Saturday for a 2-0 series loss in the 5A first-round regionals to No. 14 Woods Cross (17-10).
Korver Smith doubled and drove in two runs for Box Elder (10-17). Grant Kohler batted 2 for 3 and Maddox Earnest had one RBI.
SOFTBALL
OGDEN 6, PROV HALL 0
ROOSEVELT — After losing to Richfield earlier in the day, No. 11 Ogden stayed alive in the 3A tournament with a shutout win over No. 14 Providence Hall on Saturday night at Union High School.
Jill Wood tossed a six-hit shutout for Ogden (10-15), striking out six and walking two. Wood also doubled at the plate. Ashley Davis hit a solo home run and Madi Arney batted 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Ogden will next play at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, in Spanish Fork, facing the loser of a previous game between No. 4 Logan and No. 5 Canyon View.
RICHFIELD 8, OGDEN 3
ROOSEVELT — No. 11 Ogden High fell 8-3 at No. 6 Richfield in the opening round of the 3A state playoffs on Saturday afternoon in a game played at Union High School.
Jill Wood put Ogden on the board in the bottom of the first, but the Tigers wouldn’t lead again despite four Richfield errors. The Wildcats produced eight runs on nine hits, including six earned runs off Wood (six strikeouts) en route to the win.
Wood (2 for 4) and Lauretta Taylor (2 for 4) each recorded an RBI.
EMERY 10, MORGAN 8
MORGAN — No. 8 Morgan scored twice in the sixth to go up 8-7, only to see No. 9 Emery (5-18) plate three runs in the top of the seventh and take a 3A first-round playoff game Saturday.
Kassidy Wardell drove in four runs to lead Morgan (8-18) at the plate. Joesi Kelly hit 3 for 5 with two triples and two RBIs.
In the 3A double-elimination format, Morgan will next play at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Spanish Fork. They’ll face the loser of No. 2 North Sanpete and No. 7 Manti, which is noon Tuesday. Morgan would play again at 5 p.m. Tuesday with a win.
