Layton senior Ava Wyatt competes in the 6A girls 100-meter hurdles at the Utah High School State Track Meet at BYU in Provo on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

Davis junior Lydia Tarbet only started competing in track last year and said it was surprising to discover she had an aptitude for it.

“I started training in the hurdles and started loving track, then figured out that I went super-fast,” Tarbet said. “It’s taken a lot of dedication and I’ve had to put in a lot of work on my own, but it’s been so fun. I love it. It’s a great culture, a great community. It’s so fun to push yourself.”

Her talent was on display at the Utah High School State Track and Field Meet at BYU, which concluded on Saturday. Not only did the Dart junior win both the 6A girls 100-meter dash (12.04 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (42.90 seconds) and come in second in 100-meter hurdles and 200 meters, but in the preliminaries she beat the 6A state record in the 300-meter hurdles as well as setting personal marks in her other events.

“I never thought I could do those things,” Tarbet said. “It’s been an amazing experience and just so fun. Breaking the record was amazing. My coach and I were hoping to run the 300 hurdles in 43 seconds and then I hit 42. I love the competition and having (Layton senior Ava Wyatt) in front of me made me push harder. She definitely helped me for sure.”

In addition to being second in the 300-meter hurdles, Wyatt ended up winning the 6A 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.88 seconds.

Tarbet, though, will now set her sights on seeing what she can do as a senior.

“I’ve got one more year, and I’m excited,” Tarbet said. “I’m looking at working with hurdle coaches and I think I’ll be better next year. I can’t wait.”

Tarbet’s individual mark of two state championships at the competition was surpassed by Box Elder sophomore Kassidee Kidd, who won the 5A long jump (18-5.0), won the 5A 100-meters in 12.04 seconds, and joined Box Elder senior Kaylan Anderson, senior Oakley Norman and junior Sevia Sommer to win the 5A 4×100-meter relay in 1:42.09.

In addition, Kidd and her teammates got to celebrate with her team as the Bees won the 5A team title, pulling away from the second-place teams Salem Hills and Springville.

“I love our team,” Kidd said. “I love the love we have. We cheer each other on and have so much fun. It’s awesome. I love these girls.”

Anderson also had an individual title as she won the 5A 400-meters in 55.55 seconds, but also loved talking about her team.

“I just want to say that all these girls are so amazing,” Anderson said. “I’m going to miss all of them. I’m so thankful for the opportunity to be able to run. God’s given us a great blessing.”

Box Elder also got important contributions from senior twin distance runners Maya and Macie Lee, who scored key points in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter races.

“I loved watching our team do so well,” Maya Lee said. “I’ve seen all of their hard work and they’ve improved so much. You could see it here. I loved seeing them win their races and just do so well.”

Macie Lee added: “I really enjoy how proud we are of each other. We could see the work we put in all season and through the years pay off on the track here. It’s so many to see all the personal records and see our team work together. It’s just awesome.”

Bee head coach Katie Johnson said winning the championship was a result of a team that really fought for each other during the competition.

“We worked through some injuries early in the season and they stuck to it,” Johnson said. “They came together when they needed to and they put it together. They love each other and you can feel it.”

Other Northern Utah girls also earned spots atop the podium during the three-day state meet.

Ben Lomond senior Hadley Chadwick won the 3A 100-meters in 12.40 seconds. She finished second in the 200-meters.

Ogden junior Avery Barton won the 3A 3,200-meters in 10:27.25. She was second in the 1,600-meters.

UMA Hill Field freshman Je’naye Stewart won the 2A 100-meters in 12.77 seconds.

The Syracuse 4×400 relay team of junior Talia Thompson, junior Shelby Lord, senior Kennedy Hadley, and junior McKenzie Hislop won the 6A race in 3:51.37, just edging out Davis for the title.

In the girls team competition, in addition to Box Elder’s title, the Davis girls were fifth in Class 6A and Ogden was fifth in Class 3A.
