Weber High’s star senior is three wins deep into his fourth season of high school golf, which includes consecutive wins last Thursday at Lakeside in West Bountiful and Monday at Valley View in Layton. Bybee, the 6A leader entering Monday’s tournament with a 65.68 adjusted average card, tied two more Northern Utah notables, Layton senior Ryan Liechty and Farmington junior Cruz Davidson, with 67 in a three-way tie for first.
The day didn’t tee off quite right, but Bybee didn’t flinch.
Beginning the day with a three-putt, Bybee thread the needle for eagle on No. 12, which set the rhythm for the Warriors senior to hit 17 different greens on Monday. Davis junior Jackson Gross finished a single stroke shy of a four-way tie for first place with 68 at fourth overall on the day.
“I always stay patient,” Bybee said. “I started making some birdies, started making some putts and we got hot… It’s a beautiful course. It’s probably one of my favorite courses that we play all year.”
Bybee cracked the top 25 last year at state, and is looking for his third trip to this year’s tournament, Oct. 12-13 at TalonsCove in Saratoga Springs.
Picking up the game late in junior high, Bybee is making his final run on the high school circuit before plotting his post-graduation plans. A varsity competitor for each of those seasons leading up to his sendoff have revolved around one thing: discipline. Before school, Bybee’s getting in time on the green; After school, it’s nine holes or the driving range – all of it keeping his game as sharp as possible ahead of the next round.
“It’s really about just working hard,” Bybee said. “That’s my thing, not getting complacent. There’s still more I can get out of this season. I don’t want to get in a spot where I’m thinking, oh I’ve done this already, I can kind of rest – I want to keep pushing myself and keeping going.”
Bybee enjoyed a busy summer, too, with a win at the Salt Lake City Junior Major in June, and a top-15 finish at last month’s Johnny Miller Championship, also in Midway. Liechty, the younger brother of former Lance and BYU golfer David Liechty, and Coulson Summerhays (tied for fifth on Monday), the son of another Cougars great, David Summerhays, were among a field of prep golfers competing alongside Bybee at 128th Utah State Amateur at Soldier Hollow in July.
It’s a talented lot, Region 1, with four more regular-season tournaments before the region finals. After a busy summer, Bybee and Weber enjoy a 14-day window until their home tournament, at The Barn Golf Course in Pleasant View, on Aug. 31.
