Fremont High's Calvin Cooper follows through on his swing in a prep baseball game against Weber on Saturday, April 4, 2026, in Plain City.Nash Ferguson lifted a high fly ball to right field at UCCU Ballpark, sending Fremont’s Hunter Maycock back near the warning track.
But Monday was not an ordinary May 18. With temperatures barely above 40 degrees for the 11 a.m. game, and with new snow dusted on mountaintops across the Wasatch Front, a swirling breeze played on the fly ball, which ended up out of Maycock’s reach and sent Ferguson to third with a leadoff triple.
Ferguson scored on a Cayden Giles single, Maple Mountain went up 1-0 to open the game and set up the No. 2 Golden Eagles to an eventual 11-1, run-rule victory in six innings to begin 5A double-elimination bracket play at Utah Valley University.
No. 7 Fremont (19-9) cracked seven hits and left runners on third base in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Maple Mountain ace Kavyn Carter was difficult to solve for the Silverwolves, tossing six innings with one earned run while striking out six and walking zero.
Fremont broke through in the fifth inning when Landon Palmer and Maycock led off the top of the frame with singles. Palmer then scored on a Carter balk, but Maycock was left on third base with one out.
Tad Grange batted 2 for 3 for the Silverwolves and added a few standout defensive plays at first base. Jasen Pearson added a 2-for-3 performance while Palmer, Maycock and Adam Mikesell each added one single.
Calvin Cooper took the loss, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking one.
After the first-inning triple, Fremont catcher Ashur Clark cut down Giles stealing third, which saved a run later in the inning.
Maple Mountain (23-6) broke it open in the third inning, however. Three singles, one double and two Fremont errors led to a four-inning frame for the Eagles — a 5-0 lead that continued to mount.
Fremont next plays at 11 a.m. Tuesday in an elimination game against either No. 3 Pleasant Grove or No. 6 West Jordan.
No. 4 West Field is slated for a 7 p.m. start against No. 21 Skyline.
