Bonneville High senior Whitni Johnson was in contention all day Tuesday, the second and final day of the 5A girls golf state championship tournament at Riverbend Golf Course in Riverton, but couldn’t make enough headway to catch Brighton sophomore Claire Olafsson.

Johnson shot 2-over for the tournament, four shots back of champion Olafsson at 2-under, to finish in fourth place in a clear pack of four at the top. After an even 72 on Monday, Johnson followed that with birdies on Holes 2 and 16, but also carded four bogeys. Olafsson shot 1-under 71 on both days, overcoming a double bogey on Hole 11 with five birdies in her final round.

Brighton finished 1-2 individually but was third as a team. Woods Cross won the 5A team title at 55-over.

Bonneville finished fourth as a team at 71-over. Junior Presley Shears (22-over) and senior Anna Umbrell (23-over) finished 12th and 13th individually. Junior Addy Stanger (30-over) tied for 23rd and freshman Marissa Johnson (31-over) finished tied for 25th.

Box Elder finished just behind Bonneville in fifth place. Bees junior Olivia White shot 10-over on Day 1 but fell back to a 17th-place finish at 28-over for the tournament. Junior Sammie Blacker and senior Izabel Nelson both carded 38-over to tie for 36th.

West Field landed ninth as a team with senior Tailey Buckway finishing 15th with a 24-over tournament. Sophomore Taylor Schmitt was 43-over for 46th place and junior Jovi Purser finished one shot back at 44-over.

In the 16-team field, Fremont missed the Day 1 cut as a team. Junior Aliyah Francom was the only Silverwolf to make Day 2 individually, finishing at 44-over, tied for 51st among the 71 golfers who played both rounds.

Starting at $4.32/week.
