HERRIMAN — Coming out of halftime, you’d have thought the Davis sideline was South Padre Island on spring break when Elias Peterson brought down No. 4 Herriman’s Bryson Sweeney for the second of two stops sandwiching a Griffin Carmac field goal, putting the No. 5 Darts in front for the first time during Friday night’s 6A quarterfinal bout.

It was a big moment, considering the Davis defense stopped the Mustangs just once by the end of the first half, despite putting together three answers of their own on offense.

Then, Herriman turned to its leading rusher, senior Filisi Filipe (166 yards), returning to the game for two late touchdown runs after missing a considerable chunk of the first half.

A reliable running back in Max Stevens (93 yards), and Filipe’s big-time touches in the second half propelled Herriman past Davis 36-22 on Friday, and into the semifinals against No. 1 Skyridge on Thursday, Nov. 12, at Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Davis coach Scott Peery declined to speak to the Standard-Examiner following Friday’s loss. His sixth season as head coach ends at 8-4 overall with a third region title in four years.

After a slow start to the second half, Herriman QB Bryson Sweeney (153 yards, two touchdowns) and the Mustangs offense received a much-needed spark, putting the ball in the hands of a familiar face.

Filipe’s first touchdown — arriving with roughly 1o minutes left in the fourth quarter — put the Darts on notice after a fumble by Davis running back Kysen Gallegos (36 yards) respawned Herriman’s offense near midfield shortly after punting it away toward the end of the third quarter.

Paden Toula threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns Friday, but Davis couldn’t answer the Herriman score when his fourth-down attempt fell just outside the grasp of Utah commit Jaxton Itaaehau (179 yards, two touchdowns).

Toula spent time injured on the field after the play, and Cam Moody (29 yards) replaced the Darts’ starting quarterback on the first drive back following a Filipe touchdown run. Unable to answer and turning the ball over on downs, Davis opened the door for another Filipe touchdown, effectively sealing their fate trailing 36-22 with 5:24 left in the contest.

Davis, which is 17 years removed from its last state semifinal appearance in 2009, wasn’t without its chances in Friday’s heavy-duty road test.

Toula spun an early interception from his defense into an 18-yard touchdown pass to Sam Coleman (41 yards, one touchdown), and Itaaehau pulled in two more Toula throws for 63- and 39-yard touchdown receptions inside the final 5 minutes of the first half.

Davis missed two separate two-point attempts before settling for a Griffin Carmack PAT on its third score before the break, making Herriman’s lead 21-19.

Coming out of halftime without the ball, Davis defensive lineman Cam Evans dropped Stevens short of the first-down marker, forcing a punt out of the gate. It wasn’t a touchdown that followed, but Carmack’s 41-yard field goal after the stop seemingly turned the page on a Herriman offense that ate up a lot of clock by utilizing Stevens on the ground in the first half.

But, without an answer for Filipe’s re-emergence, Davis dropped from its strong defensive start and, with Friday’s loss, from the 6A playoff picture entirely.

CORNER CANYON 42, SYRACUSE 6

DRAPER — Ledger Wight tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Bo Metcalfe near the end of the third quarter on a running clock and No. 11 Syracuse fell at No. 3 Corner Canyon in the 6A quarterfinals.

The score pulled Syracuse (6-5) to a 35-6 deficit. The Titans gave up five rushing touchdowns and one score through the air to typically pass-heavy Corner Canyon (10-2).

WEST 49, FREMONT 0

SALT LAKE CITY — No. 8 Fremont’s season came to a screeching halt with a 7-5 record in a shutout loss at No. 1 West (12-0) in the 5A quarterfinals that ended after three quarters via mercy rule.
