We’ve reached the final stretch, folks. The final two weeks of the high school football regular season are upon us, and a handful of Northern Utah boasts a handful of programs with lots to play for late in the schedule.

I’ve condensed last week’s results, and some of my own thoughts, into a list of my October teams to watch as we pursue a postseason picture through these final weeks of region play. Here’s who I’m watching as the season unfolds:

Region 1

Davis (5-3, 2-0)

The Darts are pinning their region hopes on wins against Layton at home on Thursday and a regular-season finale at Weber next week as the only team with a perfect record left in Region 1.

After taking down Syracuse on the road in Week 7, Davis found the end zone late on Paden Toula’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Bode Sparrow en route to a 14-3 win at Farmington. Bouncing back, the Titans reset with a 50-37 home win vs. Weber.

Toula approaches the 1,500-yard mark as a senior; there’s enough in the tank through the air and on the ground for the Darts to claim these last two wins to finish the season at 7-3 overall ahead of the statewide playoff brackets reveal on Saturday, Oct. 17.

A name to watch: Bridger Young (LB), 11 tackles (2 solo), .5 TFL last week vs. Farmington

Region 5

Box Elder (7-1, 4-0)

Carson Mund and the Bees escaped from an improbable situation last week – coming back from two scores down in the fourth quarter to stun Fremont – and remain a perfect 4-0 in the race for Region 5. Box Elder travels to Clearfield (2-6, 0-4), fresh off a 19-15 home loss to Bonneville, before they return home for what could easily be a de facto region title game with West Field in Week 10.

A name to watch: Bracken Hester (DB), 10 combined tackles (6 solo) vs. Fremont.

West Field (6-2, 4-0)

Facing a far steeper slope, West Field is out to prove its place amongst a talented Region 5, coming off a sixth consecutive win and a 21-20 road scare at Layton over the weekend. They’ll get a maligned Fremont team this week in a battle for the west side of I-15.

Caden Judy punched in his second touchdown rush with three seconds remaining to evade a Lancer’s sword and prevent a major home win for Layton and quarterback Tillman Thomas (260 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception). Judy touched the ball 17 times last week, as the Longhorns trumped Layton on the ground 204-32.

Should Fremont avenge last week’s loss, it’ll most likely set up a three-way race for the throne, with the Longhorns traveling to Box Elder in Week 10.

A name to watch: Andrew Combe (WR), 6 receptions, 93 yards, 1 touchdown vs. Layton.

Fremont (5-3, 3-1)

Had Fremont successfully gotten its kickoff to Box Elder, we could be having a much different conversation around the Silverwolves right now.

They endured a tough loss last week, but the fact remains: Fremont has figured out how to continue providing itself with winning scenarios despite its injury concerns. Calvin Cooper isn’t connecting on every throw, but he’s hitting some big-time targets; Wyatt Bennett and Breckon Phillips were crucial last week vs. Box Elder, and now here comes West Field.

Titan Jordan led Fremont’s backfield with nine carries for just 27 yards last week, but the senior punched in a meaningful touchdown to begin the second half. Two strong arms, Cooper and Easton Eilertson, will duke it out this week, but it’s tough to roll against Fremont after a loss.

A name to watch: Calvin Cooper (QB), 211 passing yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception

Region 11

Bear River (5-3, 3-2)

Craig Anhder and Bear River are a 5-3 pairing entering the last two weeks of the regular season, and that’s going to feel real good entering a reset opportunity at Deseret Peak on Thursday.

Brady Muir and Mountain Crest (5-3, 2-3) sailed over the Bears’ defense with four touchdowns coming through the air on just 15 attempts by the senior quarterback. On the ground, BR rushers Bennett Allen, Dalton Marble, and quarterback Preston Wilkinson combined for four rushing touchdowns and 280 yards.

Bear River sure would’ve liked that road win. However, there’s still plenty to play for as the Anhder program Ridgeline comes to Garland in Week 10 to finish things out, but we’re talking about a very possible 6-4 or even 7-3 football team should the stars align for the Bears to play spoiler against the region favorite.

A name to watch: Bennett Allen (RB/MLB), 73 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns, 10 combined tackles (5 solo) vs. Mountain Crest

Region 3A-North

Morgan (7-1, 3-0)

Owen Gilson and Morgan continue racking up big numbers as the Trojans search for another region banner.

It’ll come through a hot Ogden team on Thursday night, when Morgan tries for a 19th consecutive win in the series dating back to 1968. Morgan churned out another 371-yard game through the air against Grantsville last week, and that receiver arsenal, chasing 2,000 combined yards, is coming for the Tiger secondary this week.

A name to watch: Rhett Larsen (WR), 6 receptions, 167 yards, 2 touchdowns

Ogden (5-3, 2-1)

Terry Larsen and the Tigers are on the verge of a third consecutive winning season with seven wins, but that road goes through Morgan, and it’s easily their biggest road test against a deep Trojans squad.

Emmett Rector is pushing 1,200 passing yards, and Ogden – holding opponents to an average of just 13.0 points per game over the last five weeks – is banking on another strong night defensively for a shot at knocking off Morgan for the first time since the height of the Vietnam War.

A name to watch: Blake Weston (TE/MLB), 4 receptions, 89 yards, 3 touchdowns, 11 combined tackles (8 solo) vs. Union.
