SALT LAKE CITY — Jeff Hazard delivered the race of his career as the 5A boys cross country state champion on Tuesday at Sugar House Park.
He’ll get more time on track this spring, but the senior Hazard couldn’t help but feel he was running for more than himself in the moments before registering a personal record of 15:06.53 as the individual 5A champion.
Hazard was last year’s 5A runner-up, and previously 16th as a sophomore. Northridge finished 17th overall on Tuesday, but Hazard couldn’t be prouder of his team and the long race they’ve endured together.
“I feel so good right now,” Hazard said. “Going into the race, I remember just thinking how this is the last time I’ll be able to race with this team, my team. It’s kind of emotional for me; the last race with the boys as a team for cross country. It’s been four years with this team, and I’ve just been through a lot with this team, so I was just going into it with a lot of gratitude.”
Navigating Achilles tendinitis, an overuse injury commonly found among long-distance runners, Hazard powered through the pain to reach a major milestone after four years running for the Knights.
“It’s kind of tough coming into this because I’ve been kind of going through an injury. I’ve been cross-training three days a week and running 3 days a week, so I was kind of feeling it’d be tough to improve as much as I did last year, but I just kept that belief that I could still do it.”
Fremont was the only Region 5 boys squad among the top 10 teams on Tuesday, finishing fourth overall with Duncan Judkins (19th, 16:30.04), Beau Jenkins (21st, 16:31.73), and Connor Newton (28th, 16:50.73) landing top-30 finishes for the Silverwolves.
On the 5A girls side, Evelyn Cook represented Northridge in the top 10 with a ninth-place individual finish (19:20.93). Box Elder’s Brynlee Cragun also represented Region 5 with a 20th-place individual finish (19:49.04).
No Region 5 girls team placed inside the top 10. Fremont, led by Tenaya Norton (39th, 20:44.90), led the region at 13th overall.
Davis County shines among 6A girls
Ellie Dorius claimed the 6A girls individual championship for Farmington with a state-best time of 17:54.41 on Tuesday.
Four spots back, Davis High’s Isabella Cram made a late push for fifth place alongside sixth-place medalist Elsie Thacker of Layton High.
Cram, finishing at 18:16.50 in the final cross country championship of her career, beat Thacker by roughly 8 seconds for her fifth-place medal.
“Coming in, I was really wanting to take fifth,” Cram said. “That was my goal, and going throughout the race, I started struggling at (the second mile), but with 800 meters left, I was like, ‘I can take this,’ and I just pushed as hard as I could. … One of my teammates ran up to me (afterward) and was like, ‘You took fifth.'”
Cram is currently fielding opportunities at Weber State, Southern Utah and Utah Valley.
“Being a senior, I wanted to finish as high as I could. I finished sixth as a sophomore and 10th as a junior, so finishing fifth and taking third for (our) team was just so amazing. I’m so happy with how my team performed and how I performed. It was a great day.”
Davis finished third overall with Cram, Addy Loveland (16th, 19:07.98), Erin Christensen (21st, 19:17.56), and Eliza Knechtel (30th, 19:57.18) helping the team result. Layton High finished eighth overall, with Thacker and Annie Newman (13th, 18:57.52) fitting into the top 15.
Weber High, led by McKell Jensen (31st, 19:57.52), finished 10th overall.
Skousen, Harris crack top 15 among 6A boys
Davis High senior Harrison Skousen wrapped his prep career as the fourth-place individual medalist on Tuesday in the 6A boys championship.
Skousen, finishing at 15:18.70, ended up roughly 10 seconds behind 6A individual champion Trevin Lounsbury of Herriman.
Just outside the top 10, Layton High’s Parker Harris, a junior, finished at 15:40.75 to narrowly beat Luke Shumway of Lehi by less than half a second.
The Davis boys led the Region 1 crowd in fifth place overall: Luke Baughman (19th, 15:48.26), Jonas Clay (26th, 15:57.96), Noah Hauck (29th, 16:04.74), and Devin Black (33rd, 16:10.26) fueled the result.
