TAYLOR – It’s amazing what coaches can learn from the opening month of high school girls soccer.
Nine matches into the regular season, West Field coach Cade Miller is watching his program push its own ceiling by the week, and Fremont’s Heath Madsen is confident theirs rests higher than 1-8.
Goalkeeper Hadley Glaittli put her body on the line for Fremont, bolstered back deep by two seniors, Taylor Grose and Avery Chambers, but ultimately endured a 2-0 defeat Tuesday via the leg of West Field’s Kate Marriott and forward Julia Robbins.
The Silverwolves (1-8, 1-3 Region 5) are giving themselves a chance defensively, Madsen said after Tuesday’s loss. He saved a nice chunk of credit for his junior goalkeeper, who stood, and dove, in front of many Longhorn chances.
“Hadley’s a fantastic keeper,” Madsen said. “As far as saves, I think she had three or four and our goals (allowed) total could’ve been 4 or 5 to nothing. I think it’s to her credit it was held to two… She made some heroic saves to keep (West Field) out of the net.”
Madsen, too, saved praise for his veteran back line.
“(Grove) finds a way to step in front when a long ball is being passed,” Madsen said. “Taylor Chambers, too, is just lightning back there. Her maturity, together with Grove, their maturity is just so needed in my back line.”
It’s a tricky thing translating the practice blueprint to the in-game sequence, but, as Madsen laid out, those chances will only find his forwards, Jerzee Watson and Sierra Schneider, as his team carves out lanes for themselves.
“I think when we practice, we pass the ball around and it looks fluid and it’s a nice, fluid motion until we get into a game and we end up kicking long balls and our forwards are up to with no one to go to,” Madsen said. “If we could build more methodically, we would have more bodies up and naturally get people up to the top and have bodies to score.”
“I think it’s just a matter of time before we see it come out on the field,” Madsen said.
Fremont hosts Roy on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
Marriott sparks West Field early for third region win
Just six minutes into Tuesday’s win, Kate Marriott, a rising junior in West Field’s midfield, the match’s first goal off Sadie Wiseman in the first half. The goal set up a halftime lead, and the momentum for another goal by Julia Robbins on the back end en route just the the Longhorns’ (5-4, 3-1) third home win this season.
It was a solid ball, Marriott recalled, and came together somewhat perfectly; She’s up to four goals on her junior campaign.
“My teammate, Sadie, she played a great ball in and I just finished it,” Marriott said. “We (work) on finishing a lot at practice and that’s helped a lot… We run a lot, but I think it’s helping us in the game, overall. It’s so hot when we play, and I feel like I can go for a lot longer than I used to be able to in the heat.”
Creating lanes for a speedy Marriott in the midfield is what has Miller excited for her growth in the weeks ahead.
“I’m need her to have confidence to match her skill level, because she truly is an incredible player,” Miller said of Marriott. “When she scores goals, good things happen for us.”
Miller, though, is still looking for his offense to take more off those opportunities off the table and place them on the scoreboard.
“We’ve been working on our movement off the ball, so they’ve been much better in the meantime and that really opens us up,” Miller said. “We gotta learn to capitalize on our opportunities, especially when nobody’s coming toward us.”
West Field leads its all-time series with Fremont 2-1 since kicking off the girls soccer portion of the rivalry last fall. The Silverwolves will host the Longhorns later this month, Sept. 24, amidst the final three-game stretch of the regular season.
“We’re nearly the end of these girls who attended or have been part of the Fremont culture, so it’s nice to have that – I’m glad we’re 5A and it’s nice to couple a region win, too,” Miller said.
West Field hosts Box Elder on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
Around Northern Utah
• Davis (8-0, 0-0 Region 1), off to an 8-0 start in August opens region play hosting Syracuse on Thursday. Utah Tech commit Jocee Eddy leads the Titans in the midfield with 1.5 goals per match so far this season, but Syracuse has dropped three of its last four.
• Bonneville (8-1, 4-0 Region 5): is on a roll with three consecutive shutouts to begin region play. Fellow Utah Tech commit Maggie Anderson is playing a key role defensively for the Lakers, and combo Taylor Dearden and and Marley Chournos lead the team with four goals apiece through nine matches.
• Ben Lomond (5-1, 0-0 Region 12), which hung a 9-2 win on St. Joseph at home wrap its nonregion slate, opens region play at 3-5 Grantsville on Thursday for its first region assignment.
