TAYLOR — At only 15 years old, 5-foot-8 West Field sophomore Ethan Jeppesen is not old enough to drive, but his big-play interception late in the fourth quarter against Bonneville steered the Longhorns to victory road.

West Field rallied from a two-score deficit in a four-minute span of the final frame, escaping with a 36-30 Region 5 homecoming triumph over the Lakers on Friday night.

Jeppesen, who led his team with six tackles, was on the field because a previous starting linebacker was injured last week against Roy. He made the most of his moment.

“Chaz (Barker) went down last week. I was able to step up today, made some good plays … be the player I need to be,” Jeppesen said. “Coaches said we’ve got to get it done. There’s no time like the present. Gotta make a play, and I was there to make it.”

Bonneville led 30-28 and took possession with 6:23 remaining, hoping to close things by chewing some clock.

Kaden Martinez rumbled for 14 yards and a first down but, facing a third-and-long on the next series, the Lakers opted to go for the jugular and drew up a pass play over the middle.

“I dropped back in coverage. I was spying the quarterback. I got the pick. There’s nothing like it … great feeling,” Jeppesen said. “I’d seen that in film and it was exactly what I expected from practice. As soon as I got the ball, I was thinking touchdown. I didn’t quite get there, but it turned the ball over to the offense.”

The Longhorns started at the Bonneville 42 and looked to have taken the lead when senior running back Caden Judy swept right and raced for a 34-yard touchdown, but he was ruled out at the 12.

Four plays later, Judy scored the winning touchdown from 3 yards away with 2:22 left, and quarterback Easton Eilertson added a two-point conversion for the final margin.

“I was tired and sucking wind after the long run. I’m just glad I ended up getting it, for sure,” Judy said. “The coaches said ‘get Judy the ball,’ and I’m glad they did.”

West Field’s comeback spoiled a stellar performance by Bonneville freshman quarterback Luke Loughton, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third.

Trevyn Sears caught both of Loughton’s touchdown tosses, tallying 3 and 37 yards.

Loughton also began the other Laker TD when he passed to Polo Afuvai, who in turn threw to a wide-open Boston Chipman for a 42-yard strike and an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

Eilertson’s 7-yard keeper late in the first quarter put West Field ahead 7-6 after one period.

West Field (3-2, 2-0 Region 5) led 21-15 at the half, but Loughton’s second touchdown pass to Sears in the third quarter and his 6-yard scamper at the 8:36 mark of the fourth period gave the Lakers a 30-21 edge.

To that point, the Longhorns had done everything they possibly could to hand the game to the Lakers.

With West Field plagued by a laundry list of penalties (five in the first quarter alone), Bonneville took full advantage of three turnovers in the first three quarters. Colt Waters recovered a fumble, Greyson Borchert (who totaled 17 tackles) blocked a punt and Cole Rivera intercepted a pass for the Lakers (1-4, 0-2), and all three turnovers resulted in touchdowns.

But when it came to crunch time, West Field stopped the bleeding, halted the turnover train, cleaned it up, and was precision perfect down the stretch.

“We were really jumpy. We were excited for the game; homecoming tomorrow … going to go party,” Judy said. “We have a motto on the team. We say don’t point fingers at each other, and that was the reason we were able to score two touchdowns and win this game.

“All the mistakes, we say ‘go fish’ and forget about it immediately,” Judy said. “We just needed to hurry up and score fast and have our defense hold them to four and out and get the ball back, and we’d win.”

Elijah Woods closed the gap to 30-28 on a 2-yard touchdown run (his second score of the game), with 6:23 left, setting the stage for Jeppesen’s heroics.

Judy’s winning run was also his second of the game, and he was quick to pass out the praise.

“I give all the credit to my O-line. My O-line is the reason I can run the way I could,” Judy said. “My teammates, my brothers, are the only reason. I’m super grateful for this family that I have.”

Judy wasn’t handing out empty praise, either. He finished with 134 yards on 18 carries and Woods added 115 yards on 16 carries. West Field totaled 507 yards of offense after Eilertson finished 11 of 31 for 221 yards through the air. Gavin Ortegon (three catches, 91 yards) and Kolt Abbott (three catches, 80 yards) were Eilertson’s main recipients. Trevyn Thomas added an interception on defense.

Bonneville totaled 300 yards, cashing in on those turnovers to put West Field on its heels. Loughton finished 14 of 18 for 167 yards. Ethan LaFollette had four catches for 58 yards, while Martinez added 59 yards on 15 carries.
