The 5A tournament, now at Liberty Park Tennis Center in Salt Lake City, continues Thursday morning, one day before the 3A tourney begins with its Round of 32 matches just a little farther south down I-15 at Brighton High School. The UHSAA is set to release its 6A and 4A state playoff brackets on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Here’s a look at the top competitors still in action through the first weekend:

Avie Fisher, Fremont

The No. 3 singles player in Utah and No. 18 seed in 5A first singles, Fisher (23-6) advanced to the Round of 16 over the weekend with a three-set victory (7-5, 2-6, 6-2) over Taylorsville’s Katherine Reynolds at Brighton High School. Fisher finished the Region 5 tourney a match shy of Box Elder’s Brielle Yates in the first singles finals.

Yates, the No. 16 seed, dropped from the Round of 32 following a loss to Pleasant Grove’s Brielle Funes. Similarly, fellow Bees hopeful Sophie Stokes, the No. 12 seed in second singles, fell to No. 24 Graciella Vanmeeteren (Northridge) in the Round of 32.

Emberlie Heap, Weber

A top-10 singles name all season, Heap, a senior, surges into the postseason at 17-1 overall after her first regular-season loss to Bountiful’s Lola Sulser last week. Eyeing another trip to the state championships, Heap’s taken a step forward in multiple ways; The Region 1 tourney concludes Tuesday at West Field High School.

Representing Weber in second singles, Scarlett Holker is 20-3 overall following just her third regular-season loss to Bountiful’s Layla Stevenson last week.

Ogden singles trio on a roll

Tigers sophomore Kimi Belnap, Ogden’s No. 7 seed in second singles, earned a first-round bye after taking a big step alongside twin sister Bree Belnap, the No. 9 seed in first singles, and closing the season with a 15-9 overall record and a win against Logan’s Eva Bateman in the region finals last week.

Kimi Belnap awaits the winner of No. 10 Amilyn Morrill (South Sevier) or No. 23 Raquel Young (Duchesne) in the Round of 16 on Friday in Salt Lake City.

Likewise, No. 9 Bree Belnap gets another Ogden local, No. 24 Stella Hemmersmeier (St. Joseph), in the Round of 32 on Thursday at Brighton High School. In third singles, Bernice Winn protects her 22-2 record as the No. 4 seed in Friday’s Round of 16, awaiting the winner of No. 13 Claire Pehrson (North Sanpete) or No. 20 Londyn Sweeney (Providence Hall).

Two local top-10 seeds headline 5A doubles on Thursday

Box Elder and Fremont are representing Region 5 in first and second doubles this week with three key matchups advancing just three teams to the quarterfinals.

Box Elder: Bees freshman duo Emma Thatcher and Kenadee Lowe, the No. 13 seed in first singles, survived the Round of 16 this weekend, but now prepare for No. 4 Elizabeth Bednar and Cora Clayton (Timpview). Junior Mykell Blacker and freshman Claire Anderson, the No. 10 seed in second doubles, are similarly fighting for Box Elder in a top-10 matchup with No. 7 Tess Benson and Brightlyn Rowley (Pleasant Grove) on Thursday.

Fremont: Likewise, Fremont’s Millie Shupe and Meg Roberts, the No. 10 seed in 5A first doubles, bested No. 23 No. 23 Kaylee Thomsen and Ailia Olson (Cyprus) over the weekend to advance to the Round of 16 against No. 7 Krithika Karthikeyan and Junee Ngo (Hillcrest) on Thursday.

Shupe and Roberts entered the Round of 32 winning 11 consecutive regular-season matches as a key piece of Fremont’s first region title in 28 years.
