Zeglin helps spin Vibes to another win over Raptors

By Brett Hein - Standard-Examiner | Aug 24, 2023

Nico Zeglin led a strong pitching performance for Rocky Mountain and Ogden’s second-half slide continues as the Vibes remained hot with an 8-1, small-ball victory over the Raptors on Thursday night in Colorado Springs.

The Raptors (43-38, 12-21) got four strong innings from starter Gerrit van Zijll and led 1-0 in the middle of the fifth after Dakota Conners scored on a wild pitch.

But that’s all Zeglin or anyone else allowed for the Vibes (41-39, 21-12), who held Ogden to five hits.

In the bottom half, van Zijll surrendered a leadoff single and gave way to Foster Pace. That was one of just two hits van Zijll allowed, striking out five and walking zero in four-plus innings.

Pace allowed four hits and hit a batter and, suddenly, RMV led 4-1.

Raptors reliever Mason Hoover then gave up three runs on three hits in the seventh and the game was all but over.

Seven of Rocky Mountain’s 11 hits were RBI singles. Their other run scored on a sacrifice fly. Ogden totaled six hits. Luis Almonte, Chris Macca and Jackson Cunningham each threw one uneventful inning in relief for the Vibes.

Cam Phelts was the only multi-hit player for Ogden, batting 2 for 4.

The series continues Friday through Sunday.
